Choosing your Baby Shower Theme

Submitted by bartokm

Most baby showers are decked out with a theme that is either based on the nursery decorations, or simply on the needs of the new mother. In spite of of how you decide your theme, there are many baby shower themes available and some of them are sign of the times.

When discussing your options for shower themes and decorations here is list of ideas I have found that are gaining popularity.

1. The English Tea Party - Every little girl's dream come true is a tea party with lots of flowers, fancy tablecloths and table settings, candles, and dolls (your guests) to drink tea with. And best of all hats, gloves and bolos to dress up with. Having plenty of different flavored teas is a must and the guest list can be as large or as small you choose to make it. In keeping with the theme the menu could consist of Cucumber Sandwiches (or other such light fare), scones and jam, fresh fruit and salad options. This can be a very stylish party and lots of fun for all who attend.

2. Layette Party - I am not an admirer of "hanging out" the presents (because I enjoy the unwrapping), but in a Layette theme shower that is pretty much the idea. You put up a clothesline and then the guests are asked to bring in baby clothing and hang it on the line, and the new mother takes it all home when the party is over. This works best if the guests come early and help out hanging their gifts. There shower decorations that fit well with this idea.

3. Baby Shower Brunch - I don't know about you, but I love breakfast any time of the day - as long as I don't have to cook it! Think of all the "breakfasty" things you can make - muffins, sweet rolls, quiches, tarts, omelets, potato casseroles, yum! Any decorating theme will go with this style shower, and it can be either a very casual or dressy event. There is nothing like breakfast by candlelight!

4. Baby Book Party - Just about every parent reads to their child at bedtime. So, what could be better than a Baby Book Party! Each guest brings a book they enjoy reading to their child, and if they wish, include a matching stuffed animal. Suitable themes for this type of shower are Mother Goose, Fairytales, Garden Party, Disney, etc.

5. "Go Green" Shower - If your new mother is someone who has decided to "go green" then holding an eco-friendly shower is the way to go. This would include emailing your invitations or using recycled paper. The gifts should include organic sheets, towels, clothing and diapers wrapped in an environmentally friendly way using recycled paper and bows. These items are readily available online.

Not all new mothers are having their first baby. Some may already have their nursery pretty well setup. This is something to take into consideration when you are planning your shower's theme. Here are some ideas that will work perfectly in this case:

1. Deep freeze Or Recipe Theme - This is my very favorite shower suggestion. After all, this idea is a present that keeps on giving over and over again. Instead of buying baby gifts, each guest brings a frozen dinner that can be heated up within a few months. What a tremendous idea, and thumbs up to whoever thought it up! If freezer space is limited, then instead of actual dishes, bring quick, uncomplicated recipes instead. Both the new parents will appreciate everyone's kindheartedness and have more time with each other and the family.

2. Baby Diaper Party - From the invitations, through the decorations and finishing with the gifts - all diapers! Breakup your guest list so that all diaper sizes are covered and the new parents get an sufficient amounts of all sizes. If you are having a large party, then have some of the guest bring diapering accessories like lotion, powder, etc.

3. The Mommy Party - For the mother that has everything, why not make her the focus of the shower and have all the gifts be about her instead of the baby. Presents should incorporate things the new mother can spoil herself with - succulent treats like chocolates; comfy clothes; bath and body products, gift certificates for spa treatments, manicures or pedicures, and take out food; and IOU's for babysitting while she enjoys her gifts. Who wouldn't love to get such enjoyable, decadent gifts!

4. No Shower Baby Shower - This is a best pick for those on a small or limited budget. What is a No Shower Shower? Just that. You have a baby shower, no entertainment, gifts optional. Then give everyone a disposable camera for picture taking and have a keepsake book on hand to put all the pictures in. Everyone writes in the book either their best wishes, bits of wisdom they want to pass on, and/or blessings for the new baby. If your budget is small, have your guests to each bring a favorite dish, or don't serve food at all. Any decoration themes available in stores can be used, or follow through on the No Shower theme and don't use any at all. The best part of a No Shower Shower is spending time with your friends and family.
