Getting pregnant changes everything. And when that pregnancy wasn't planned and isn't wanted, the emotions and stress involved are multiplied. Having a child is no easy task, even when you do everything the correct way to prepare for it. Even then it is hard. But to become pregnant "by accident" with no financial plan or resources at your disposal, you are looking at a very hard road ahead of you. You are probably thinking, "I can't have a kid now. I'm not ready for this. How much does an abortion cost?"

The methods and procedures used to terminate a pregnancy change as the fetus develops in the womb. It's much easier (and therefore less expensive) to abort early on in the pregnancy. The cost to get an abortion in the first trimester (week 0 - 12) of the pregnancy will cost around $300-$600.

The larger the fetus gets, the riskier the abortion can be for both mother and child. The higher likelihood of complications drives up the costs. Getting the pregnancy terminated in the second trimester (weeks 13-26) will run between $500 and $7000 on up.

Doctors normally don't perform abortions in the third trimester (weeks 27-birth) unless their is danger to the mother or child.

If you are from a lower income household, you may be eligible for some financial assistance to help pay for some of the costs. Abortions are a medical procedure and can be quite costly if any complications occur.

With the high cost of getting an abortion, another option would be to give the child up for adoption. Not only will the abortion costs become a non-factor, but it many cases, there is financial and housing assistance available for the mothers themselves while they go through the pregnancy. You won't have to take up all the responsibilities associated with a parent just yet and you will be able to sleep well knowing that your child is being raised in a great situation.
