Treatment of Swelling Feet during PregnancySubmitted by justinkenedy Tue, 9 Jun 2009
Swelling of the feet generally starts becoming apparent during the fifth month of the pregnancy, though this time limit can vary from one woman to another. It occurs due to the accumulation of fluids in the feet of the woman. Swelling of the feet can be painful to some women, due to which they may not be able to move about or do their normal work as the months pass on.
While there is not a lot you can do to prevent this condition occurring, apart from keeping up gentle exercise and not over eating, there are things you can do to prevent any further pain or damage. Make sure your shoes are not too tight, you may even need to wear a half or even full size larger shoe than you normally would. Your feet will need extra support and shock absorption too. Remedies: 1. Whenever possible, elevate your legs during the course of the day and most definitely at night. Every night you are reminded of the fluid you are retaining during the day and may not even be aware of this. Have you ever noticed how often you find yourself getting up to the bathroom (voiding) in the middle of the night? This is because the fluid in your legs is being mobilized back into your blood stream and eliminated through your kidneys. While you are lying down/sleeping, your legs are at the level of your heart and gravity is not working against you.. 2. When the arch of an individual's foot flattens out when weight is put on it, it is referred to as overpronation. Overpronation is seen in obese individuals, flat-footed people and in pregnant women. A person with this foot condition will find that their feet roll inwards while walking - which leads to all sorts of biomechanical effects such as ankle, knee and hip pain. All the joints in your leg work together to function in gait and balance and improper movement at the ankle will lead to the inappropriate delivery of forces up the leg and cause all sorts of problems. 3. Soaking your feet in lukewarm water followed by a gentle massage using cream or lotion is very helpful relief for foot pain or swelling feet. 4. These are caused by increased blood volume during pregnancy and the high progesterone levels which relax your blood vessels to prevent high blood pressure. Relaxed and slack vessels can slow down your circulation. Increased weight in your pelvis can compress the veins reducing circulation to your feet. Tips for prevention of cramps: increase circulation by rotating your ankles and walking your cramps out. Stretch your calves daily make sure you are taking your prenatal vitamins to ward off any electrolyte imbalances, and exercise. A walk around the block can help even if your legs hurt! 5. Lavender bubble baths and foot massage -It has a wonderful ingredient for your feet.
