Repairing Ceiling Water Damage And Deciding On DIY RestorationSubmitted by englishsunset Wed, 9 Feb 2011
It can be very discouraging to see water stains on your ceiling, which is a sure sign of ceiling water damage. You know you are in for a rather challenging bit of DIY restoration at this point.
Finding the source of the water leak can be very simple, or it can be maddeningly difficult. If it is a leaking pipe, you will most likely know it right away. However, if it is rain water dripping in from a leak somewhere in the roof, you might experience some complications in locating the actual leak. Water can run down rafters and joists until it hits an obstacle great enough to cause it to drip, thus making the stains on your ceiling below. This makes your detective work all the more difficult, as it can be hard to follow the water stain trail in an attic. The easy, but expensive way out is to simply hire a water damage specialist who can figure this out and fix it right away. Chances are, he has seen just about everything by now and your problem is not hard for him to solve. Be prepared for a mess and some expense though. Even if you are able to remedy to cause of the leak, you still have to fix the ceiling. If it is a ceiling tile, you are in luck; all you need to do is replace the damaged tile. If it is sheet rock, you need to cut out the damaged area and replace it. This is not really complicated, just a lot of work for the average homeowner. If you do this sort of thing everyday, it is no big deal, but when you do it twice a lifetime, you need to learn how to do it, buy some tools, get the materials needed and then find the time to actually fix it. Another consideration is the insulation that might have been damaged by the water leak. You must make sure to replace any damaged insulation so that it retains it's properties to keep your house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Plumbing problems can also be simple or very annoying to work on. If you have a leaky seal or joint you can most likely fix it yourself, Sometimes, especially in older homes, one problem leads to the next and soon you have half the plumbing in the house torn apart. This is really how it goes sometimes. When you find yourself in this situation, you must decide if you have the skill and patience to continue, or if you should just let a professional take care of it. One time I started such a project, and when I was done I had replaced the floor, shower wrap around, sink, toilet, and vanity. About the only thing I did not do was paint the room and change the curtain! One thing literally led to the next, and if I neglected what I had uncovered, the problem would have only increased over time.
