Shiba Inu: The Little Japanese Dog with a Huge HeartSubmitted by sibajar Mon, 9 Feb 2009
The Shiba Inu is one of a number of very ancient breeds connected with the northern "Spitz type" breeds from Japan. It's appearance is a good deal like that of a "dwarf" Akita, having a fox like face and "brush coat" similar to the Akita and enjoying much of the same makeup.
It is a big dog in a petite package. Its character is physically powerful and self-reliant. The Shiba is a robust breed requiring little vet care. The only problems are generally minor in nature. It has a cat's need to keep clean and will often groom itself just reminiscent of a cat. The coat involves a good brushing every so often and the nails should be kept trim but beyond that this is a dog that is a "wash and wear" dog that doesn't call for a lot of fussing with his coat to sustain his striking appearance. As one can imagine, not everyone can take on owning a Shiba. Those who do are privileged with an tremendously affectionate and loyal dog who will greet them with great delight and watch over them devotedly. Once a stranger is established into the household, be it for a one time event or as a frequent visitor, the Shiba Inu will show enormous affection and boundless enthusiasm for its brand new friend. The Shiba is not the sort of dog that makes a good "outside" dog. He needs to be in the home with his family and can turn quite aggressive to other animals or raise quite a noise in the vicinity if left to his own devices in a pen. Furthermore, the Shiba is a dog that becomes proficient at figuring out ways to escape and they have been known to climb out of pens with ease. They are extremely intelligent and investigative and can get into a lot of trouble if left to their own devices. Owners of Shiba Inu's and Shiba Inu puppies would do well to invest in a good crate for confining their dog when they are not going to be home.
