Using Basement Waterproofing Products For Water Damage PreventionSubmitted by englishsunset Mon, 31 Jan 2011
Protecting your home from water damage is extremely important, and the prevention of it often includes using a variety of basement waterproofing products.
When you see older homes, such as those with stone foundations, you have to sometimes wonder what the builder was thinking. Maybe they just did not know what they were doing, or perhaps they were so limited with resources that this was the best they could do. On the other hand, there are many old structures that have been standing solidly for hundreds of years, with little or no water damage. The basics of grading, drainage and waterproofing are really the same as they ever were. Only the products and methods have changed. In some ways there is no excuse for a home to have water damage, if it is a new construction. With all the accumulated knowledge gathered over the centuries, you would think that nobody would ever have a wet basement of leaking roof. This, however, is certainly not the case. Whether you have a new construction or an existing house, you must consider the importance of preventing water damage. The last thing you want is that musty basement smell, or having to get rid of mold or mildew. Ceiling water damage, basement floor damage, wall damage and much more can easily destroy your investment and cause massive disruptions to your family and finances. A cracked foundation can be repaired using several of the newer waterproofing products designed expressly for basements. The same goes for water that seeps through the concrete in the basement floor; you can repair it with several good products. No amount of basement waterproofing products is going to solve the problem unless you get to the root of the problem. If the grade outside is faulty, water will always seek the lowest point, which will likely be your basement or cellar. If your foundation drainage is inadequate, water will find it's way into the smallest of cracks, or even make its own path. Water has an amazing ability to penetrate almost anything, or at least do it damage. A leaking roof will cause untold damage to the ceiling below, as well as the rafters themselves. It also provides an ideal greenhouse for mold and mildew to grow and flourish. Faulty plumbing can go unnoticed for years, even though the tell-tale smell of musty basement is a dead giveaway. If left untreated, it will damage the vanity, the flooring and eventually whatever is beneath it, such as a basement ceiling. Homeowners need to be aware of the value of water damage prevention and the use of basement waterproofing products to help control the problem. A little preparation goes a long ways toward retaining the value of your home. It is also very important for the health of your family to live in a clean and dry environment, free of mold and mildew. These little spores spread throughout the air and can do considerable damage. Headaches, runny noses, sneezing and aching joints are just a few of the symptoms.
