Rob Knight
Minister for Housing

The Northern Territory Government has been allocated more than $4 million to improve public housing as part of the Australian Government’s economic stimulus package.

The $4.11 million in funding comes as part of round one of the Social Housing packages to be rolled out across the nation.

Northern Territory Minister for Housing Rob Knight welcomed the announcement saying it will see 136 public housing properties upgraded across the Territory.

“More than $2.35 million of the funding will be used to upgrade 47 houses and units, putting them back into use for Territory families,” Mr Knight said.

“The Henderson Government has committed to getting these upgrades completed as soon as possible to ensure real results for Territorians, and I expect to see works start almost immediately.”

Of the 47 vacant properties to be upgraded, 15 are located in Palmerston, 25 in Darwin and Casuarina, four in Katherine, two in Tennant Creek, and one in Nhulunbuy.

Funding has also been approved to install solar hot water units and replace or repair rooves at 43 properties in Alice Springs and Darwin. Another 46 rooves will be replaced in Darwin.

“This is a great outcome for the Territory, building on the Housing the Territory Initiative announced last week which will see new places to buy and rent and more public housing,” Mr Knight said.
