Types

There is a wide variety in the types of blogs. Such differences may relate to either the subject material of the blog or the manner in which such content is presented or the style in which it is written. Consider the following:

Personal Blogs - This takes the form of a continuously updated diary or commentary, usually by an individual, and is the traditional, most widespreadly used type of blog. Such bloggers tend to put a lot of effort into their blog posts, which is another name for a blog entry, even if their posts are never read by anyone but themselves.

In this way, blogs often become more than just a way to relate to the outside world. In some cases, Blogging can emanate a sentimental quality. It is an accepted fact that few personal bloggers acquire fame and notoriety. However, some personal blogs develop a loyal following.

A specialised form of personal blog is that which is referred to as microblogging. This is an extremely detailed style of blogging since it seeks to capture a particular moment in time and record it for posterity.

Other sites include Twitter, which is a free social networking and microblogging site. The benefit is that users can send and react to other users' updates. These are known as Tweets, and are text-based posts up to 140 characters long.

Using a blog is much quicker than e-mailing since it represents immediate contact. In fact, this is a further extension of social media. When people make contact with others and share information by means of the internet, then this represents a form of social media.

Corporate Blogs – This represents an extention of the individual blog used for personal interactions. However, they can also have an alternative business implication. There are a number of businesses that use blogs internally to impart information. Marketing, branding or public relations are useful applications of such blogs. In such scenarios, they are called Corporate Blogs.

Question Blogging – They simply answer questions. These may be submitted on a form, or by email or other means, such as telephone or VOIP, which is voice over internet protocol and normally uses a web cam. Such Qlogs, as they are also called, can be applied in order to display data from podcasts. They can also act as a means of conveying information across the internet. The answers to questions may incorporate Qlogs which use syndication, such as RSS, as a means of conveyance.

By Media Type – Consider the following classification:
A blog which is comprised of videos is called a vlog
One containing links is called a linklog
One displayng a portfolio of sketches is called a sketchblog
One consisting of photos is called a photoblog
Blogs with shorter posts and mixed media types are called tumblologs to
An unusual form of blog, based on the Gopher Protocol, is known as a Phlog.

By Device – Blogs can also be characterised by the type of hardware that is used to compose them. Consider the following:
A blog written by a mobile device, such as a mobile phone or PDA, which means personal digital assistant and is typified by a handheld computer, could be called a moblog.
