Cable packages - why are services converging?

Submitted by KyleLewis

A few years ago life may not have had all the quality conveniences but in some ways it was simpler.

If you wanted a phone you checked out the phone companies and chose one of them based on a simple comparison. If you wanted an internet connection you did the same for internet service providers. Like wise for TV, broadband internet and satellite TV. But today the services have got better and cheaper and choosing amongst them has become more complex. This is because the services are often sold as a bundle with more than one service typically being included in bundled cable packages.

So the question that arises is how come earlier these services were not sold together and why are they being sold together now? And the follow up question is where is this convergence going to end up?

The answer to the first question is that the reason for the convergence is digitization. Earlier when the services used analog signals each service required its own particular type of hardware. But with digitization the hardware needs have become very similar. What varies is just the type of information and the band width that carries the information. In layman terms band width is a measure of how fat is the information pipe. Some applications need a very fat pipe. Such as high speed broadband and high definition TV.

With hardware costs going down fat pipes are becoming cheap. So now service providers set up very fat information pipes and reach all communication and information related services to you in one fat pipe.

So where will this convergence end up? Even the experts find it tough to predict what this area of high human ingenuity will deliver next. Ongoing research is going to make the hardware more powerful and less expensive. As the power of the hardware increases more applications become possible. The applications are richer in features and make everyday life easier. Therefore what you are assured is a faster, better service with more features and greater conveniences.

This of course makes choosing cable packages more complex. But its a small price to pay for the highly improved, lower cost services. And even choosing cable packages is easier now if you do it online. You can know more about cable packages at www.bestcabledeals.org.
