eMail, Time for a change ?

Submitted by dbldee

Email as we know it, is much older than the internet.
It was not invented, but evolved.

The first email programs, were simple file directories, which contained the messages that were left on the computer from other users.
When computers became connected in networks, a from of addressing was needed.

Ray Tomlinson who worked for Bolt Beranek and Newman as a contractor, picked the @ symbol from the computer keyboard to denote sending messages from one computer to another. It was simply a matter of nominating name-of-the-user@
name-of-the-computer. This is the format that still continues. With the internet, email was made available free of charge with friendly web interfaces by providers such as Yahoo and Hotmail.
Email being free, provides a very convenient medium for electronic communication.
However, free services are always open to abuse.

Spam or Unwanted Commercial Email has made the handling of email a much more expensive proposition.

The Internet Service Providers who police the sending of messages have adopted filters that decide which messages are legitimate, so have the users and writers of email clients. The system may be imperfect as legitimate messages, sometime remain undelivered.

A Federal Registry of Do Nnot email addresses was thought to be ineffective and would only increase the problem of UCE. Perhaps there needs to be a change in either the either administration or usage.

Some corporations have instituted standard methods of writing better messages.
Others have also implemented classes in what is noted as e-mail etiquette.

The concept of social networking, may be ushering a change.
Other methods that can be adapted or adopted include RSS, Instant Messaging and SMS.

Alternative delivery of digital messages are widely available but widespread adaptation has been slow.
