How Does Design Differ From Art?

Submitted by spinxwebdesign

The answer to the question "How does design differ from art?" has been a subject of debate since quite a long time. Some of the prominent differences between design and art are as follows.

•The job of the designer varies a lot from that of the artist. While the job of the artist is to communicate anything that is new, the job of the designer is to communicate a purpose that pre-exists. The pre-existing purpose of the website could be sharing some information, selling some products or services or even proving a platform for socializing with other people.

•The purpose of the art differs from that of the design. The art creating process begins from null or say a blank medium like paper or canvas. The artist only has a feeling or opinion or view to start from. On the other hand the design process has a starting point. It could be an image that is very much associated with the product offered by the website, or just a concept or idea. It could be an action or a message.

•The basis of judging the efficiency and effectiveness of an art differs from that of design. A piece of art is judged to be good or bad on the basis of the perception and liking of the viewer. On the other hand in case of design, the design can be judged to be good or bad on the basis of its performance. A design is said to be good only when it converts the maximum number of visitors into buyers. If the web design serves the purpose for what it has been designed then it can be called a good design.

•A piece of art is received by the receiver in a different way from how a creation of a designer is received. The reception of a piece of art depends on the perception of the receiver but this perception can differ from person to person and consequently the interpretation is going to differ. On the other hand the creation of a designer needs to be received by the receiver only one way at the end of which the visitor or receive is convinced to buy the products or avail the services offered through that website. If the designer's creation is received differently the visitor may not be convinced to avail the offerings through the website. So a designer's creation needs to be understood through only a single way.

•The abilities of an artist differ greatly from that of a designer. While an artist has the ability to create artistic creations from childhood, most of the designers have been known to develop the skill of design through hard work and practice. This implies that a person without any in born inclination for art can neither create any artistic creations nor taught to be an artist but a person without any skills of a designer can be taught to be a skillful designer.
