How to get Free Ringtones for your mobile

Submitted by kinghobo

Have you just got a new phone, or are you simply fed up of that boring tone it makes when it rings ? Before you rush off to the Internet a word of warning, many of those websites that offer you "free ringtones" dont actually deliver, there sole purpose is to make money by selling either individual ringtones or setting you up for a costly subscription where ringtones are sent to your phone every week. The big search engines should really do something about this as these compaines are appearing on searches where you seach on "free ringtones" but there not backup up by there website or products.

But don't dispair there is some free sites still out there, you just have to know how to find them and how to use them, this guide assumes your phone can use midi files as ringtones. So fisrt thing is to find out the ringtone you want to put on your phone, open your Internet Browser and go to http://www.ringtones4all.com and click on polyphonic ringtones, navigation on here is easy, choose a category from the left , then the start letter of the ringtones you want and when you happy click on the ringtone itself (although im using this site as a demonstration you can infact use any site and the same principles will apply).

Once you have selected the ringtone you want then you have 2 choices

1. Download the Free Ringtone
You can click on download and your asked wether to save or run, you need to choose save. If either media player starts to play the file or you get a new quicktime window openeding cancel out go back to the original link and right click, from the new menu choose "file save as". This will then download the ringtone to your PC. Once you have got the ring tone locally on your PC then the next task is to get that over to your mobile phone. Depending on how good and how new you mobile is there are a couple of options

a. You can use bluetooth. If you have a newish laptop the chances are you have whats called bluetooth installed, this is a wireless connection method for connecting 2 devices together over a short range (thats enough of the techncial stuff), have a look on your laptop for the bluetooth settings (under control panel if you cant find them) click in bluetooth and search for devices, ensure bluetooth is switched on and is set to visible to all. After a few moments your PC will show a list of all available devices, hopefully your phone will be in that list. Click on the phone and when asked for a passkey put in 1234. Next your phone will bleep and say your Laptop is trying to connect and ask for the PIN enter the same PIN and hey presto the two are connected. If you then rightclick on the ringtone you have downloaded and choose "send to" there is an option there for bluetooth, this will send your ringtone direct to your phone.

b. You can use infrared, some slightly old laptops maynot have bluetooth but will have infrared instead, this is a line of sight communictions protocol, so you need to swicth infra red on your mobile on and point it at the port on your laptop, your pc will see the phone and bring up a send files to box, you can drag the ringtone to this box or browse to the ring tone the phone will ask you to verify the transfer and then the tone is transfered

2. Use WAP
Wap is the way your phone browses the Internet, you can use this to download the ringtone directly from the website to your PC. In most cases you need to start your phones browser and type in the url specified on the website, in the case of ringtones4all you are prompted for a number, enter the number and choose ok and the ringtones will immediatly be transferred to your phone. A word of warning depending on your service plan your phone supplier may charge you for the duration of the WAP call so always check first

So getting your hands on
