If you've been on the Internet at all in the past year, you've probably noticed a trend that has quickly developed. In fact, unless you've never used the Internet, you'd be hard pressed not to notice it! What am I talking about? The social web, or Web 2.0 as it is called by the geekier among us. So, what is this and how can it help you grow your business? Simply put this new trend is less about selling and more about communicating your solutions to the right audience; and doing it in a way that makes your audience feel involved with you, as opposed to just being customers. One of the ways you can do this is through a service called Twitter. But what is it and how can you start using Twitter effectively?

Briefly, Twitter was designed as a blogging platform, taking advantage of the blogging craze as well as Internet marketing. It is also a place where you have followers (think friends on Facebook or MySpace) that you can message. It only allows a message length of 140 characters also. At this point you might be tempted to ask, how can anyone say anything meaningful in 140 characters? True, this may seem a little short, but that means that your message needs to be succinct as well on topic. If you do this right, you will find that you quickly gain followers, eager to hear what you have to say, and hopefully buy from you.

So how should you start out if you've never "tweeted" before? As with anything, the greatest virtue is in the details. Before you even think of setting up an account (profile), take some time and plan out exactly how you want to be viewed online. You can create multiple profiles so having one for business and one for pleasure is a good idea. Remember you only have a short amount of time to make a good first impression.

Another thing that you should do, is look for groups that already discuss the problem your product solves. Make sure that you join a few. It should go without saying that your profile should be up to snuff and professional. Also, make sure that you contribute to the group with info and ideas before you try and sell them or get them on your list. To properly leverage Twitter, you need to ensure that people like and trust you first. Show that you can be a contributing member and you will reap the rewards.

You can do this by simply posting what is going on in your business. Remember not every post needs to point to your main sales page or contain some type of offer. In fact, doing this can get you banned in very short order. The best tip I can give for using Twitter effectively is to ask questions, respond with useful info, and be a part of the community. Have fun with this, remember, it is a social platform and should be used as such. Using Twitter effectively can be quick, easy and even fun, once you know how!
