How to make a popular website (based on psychology & marketing)Submitted by farouk Tue, 3 Feb 2009
I know you are fed up of the traditional advices
Content is king, write original content, get lots of back links …bla bla bla I know you are fed up of seeing the same advices everywhere on the web, that's why I am going to give you in this article something really different than what you saw everywhere else. My first website which I started 2 years ago is now getting more than 350,000 hits each month, this didn't happen by chance or coincidence but it happened because of the deep understanding of the online user's behavior that i learned over the past few years. How to make a popular website (based on psychology & marketing) Just as you are fed up with the similar pages you are seeing everywhere the visitor who is browsing your website is also fed up of the duplicate content he comes across each time he visits a website. So you are dealing with people who are already fed up and who expect to find something totally different than what they found before. I am sure you already know that people don't read but just scan the pages quickly looking for something different. As a psychologist I know that the human brain has the capability of ignoring a repetitive signal so that it becomes transparent to it. For example if this is not the first time for your to visit this website then you might not notice the Google ads that are present in between the pages simply because your mind started to ignore them. Just as the mind can ignore repetitive patterns it can also ignore repetitive information, page titles and duplicate content. So the conclusion is, in order to make a popular website you don't only need to have good content but you must have different content. How to make your website different than all other websites We now both agree that only different websites get recognized and remembered, the next few tips will help you give a strong impression to the visitor that your website is by no means similar to any other one. * Take a contrarily point of view: What's is the thing that made you feel that this article you are reading is not like the other ones you saw elsewhere? It's because I began the article by attacking the common beliefs and norms that everyone else has. You might have said to yourself "Wow, content is not the king, so what does this guy believe in?" This alone is enough to let you remember this article and this website forever * Based on psychology and marketing: I completed my MBA a year ago and I am a psychologist. This might not be of interest to you but what did you feel when you saw this subtitle How to make a popular website (based on psychology & marketing) ? Your eyes didn't ignore that section or that paragraph because your mind believed that this is not a repetitive pattern that should be ignored. If you have reached this page through Google search then this same title might be the one that brought you here. * You have five fingers? I have got 28 : Read the footer that exists in the bottom of this page and see how you feel. People want a different website and there is nothing to be ashamed of if you showed your muscles to them. Tell people that you are different, they will put the possibility in their minds, then provide them with really different content and they will believe in you. * Online users are already bored: Online users are already bored!! they saw hundreds of pages having the same content and they yawned a million time before reaching your website. Get to the point, write short articles that have useful information instead of telling them your life story in each post
