The importance of social proof theory

"Research has shown that women tend to find a man more attractive if they saw other women smiling at that man"

A research has proved that the perceived attractiveness of men increases when women see other women smile at them. Lots of people these days act without thinking by just following the herd because they believe that if everyone likes something then it must be great.

The stock market crashes because lots of people follow the herd and start panic selling
Celebrities appear more attractive because lots of people like them
a popular blogs become more popular because more people trust them

The use of social proof can help you give a strong boost to your Blog and to your sales because people will give you more credit if they found that others appreciate your work.

Examples of social proof in blogging

My first website gets more 400,000 hit/month and I display a big image stating this fact in all the pages on the website.

The day I added the image I noticed a great increase in the sales of my Ebooks!!
It seems that people started trusting me more when they knew that hundreds of thousands already trust me.

Some people put the number of their Twitter followers and RSS subscribers in their pages to be used as a social proof, and while this works 100% still lots of internet users don’t have any idea about Twitter or RSS but everyone knows that a website that gets 1,000,000 hit/month is really popular.

I know you might have no social proofs right now especially if you were a starter but did you think about using testimonials? Testimonials are also strong social proofs and they can be collected over few days by providing free samples of your products to people for honest review.

Over 1 million copies sold

I was browsing books randomly in a local library and I wasn’t interested in any of them however one of them really caught my attention , not because it was interesting but because of this line that was written on the cover:
“Over 1 million copies sold”

I picked the book and examined it in order to know why did this book sell all that number of copies??

As you can see social proof is a vital tool that must be used on every website and Blog in order for it to become more popular. If you don’t have any social proofs on your blog then find one now then add it to your blog and you will feel the effect shortly.
