How AdSense Works: Part 1

The following outlines the most important steps in understanding the workings of Adsense, and achieving the best results from it:

When the website owner, often referred to as the webmaster, has decided to place Adsense ads on his web pages, the first step is to apply to Google for an Adsense account. This is very straightforward and easily achieved. Upon acceptance, the webmaster will receive the AdSense JavaScript code specific to his account.

In order for the Adsense ads to be displayed on the webmasters’ web pages, the personalised JavaScript code must be inserted onto the webpage. There are several ways of doing this, and each is fairly straightforward. The Google Adsense site offers helpful advice.

Now that the ads can be seen on the webmaster’s selected web pages, it is only a matter of time before a visitor to the web page clicks on one of the many Adsense ads displayed on that page. When this happens, the JavaScript code creates an IFrame, which makes it possible to insert an HTML document inside another HTML document. IFrames are commonly used to add specific content, such as an advertisement, from another website into the current page.

Consider now Contextual Advertisements, which is a form of targeted advertising. This refers to advertisements that are placed so as to reach consumers based on various traits, such as demographics, purchase history, or observed behavior. Such advertisements are designed to appear on websites or other media, such as those that are displayed on mobile browsers. The specific individual visiting a website, or page within a website, represents the focus for such advertising.

A contextual advertising system scans the text of a website for keywords, which are words or phrases that depict the subject of the viewer’s interest. It then returns advertisements to the webpage based on what the viewer is viewing. As an example, if the viewer is studying a website related to sport, and that website uses contextual advertising, then the viewer will see advertisements for sports-related companies. Search engines also use contextual advertising to show advertisements on their search results pages based on the viewer’s keywords.

In the case of contextual advertisements, Google's servers use a cache of the page. A cache is a temporary storage area where data regularly accessed can be stored for rapid retrieval. When the data is stored in the cache, it can be retrieved again at a later date from the cached copy rather than recomputing the original data, so that the average access time is reduced. Using this cashed page, they can establish a set of high-value keywords. If such a set of keywords have been cached already, then advertisements are established on the web page based on those keywords.
