With the current state of the economy, businesses up and down the country have been hit quite hard because of the recession, and have led to advertising budgets to be substantially cut. Many businesses have come to rely on the Internet as a source of "value targeted traffic" but are having to face tough times. Media companies, such as newspapers, feel that they have been hit quite badly too recently. In this case, they have tried to make available the content that they produce online in the hope that monetisation would occur. Though many predicted the loss in revenue in the print industry, not many predicted the same for the online market.

In a study, it was concluded that Newspapers would be able to take advantage of Online Marketing over the period of the next few years with modest growth. Many had predicted that print advertising would be hit quite hard, but unpredictability has led some to come up with wild and rather questionable strategies to try and combat the current situation. Some well-known names in the industry have got together to discuss the issue and have suggested that users should pay to view content such as access to web sites, articles or other content. This pay per view model is likely to cause more problems than solve, as it can reduce the number of online users, which in turn makes things so much worse. Growth online is expected to increase again substantially in the next 4 years, and with the advent of handheld devices, more and more people are exposed to content. This is the light at the end of the tunnel for many, but if there are those that are looking to greater exposure online and monetising opportunities, Search Engine Marketing has to be the way forward. By incorporating a strategic Internet Marketing campaign, agencies can take advantage of their online presence and really push for better results.
