If you are interested in your website truly performing the best in search engine rankings then you will concern yourself with directory submission. There are thousands of different directories out there, some that apply to your website, and others that do not. By focusing on directory submission in the directories that are related to your site you will certainly increase your rankings. Of course, each directory has categories as well so it does take some research and effort to get your website submitted to all the directories in the right categories that really benefit your site.

Directories submission services are a good means to promote a new website. Do not submit the same web URL more than once and do not hide your listing. Always go for manual submissions. Automatic submissions may get banned due to repetitive content or chances of errors in it. Do not use the same title, description and keywords. Using the same link text or title of your submission, all the sites providing the link back to you will show the same title and description and it seems a bit unnatural as search engines will pick the same repetitive text.

Directories are similar to yellow pages of all quality websites. If a website is submitted to such directory and accepted, the benefits accruable are mouth-watering. The webmaster will basically enjoy two profound benefits, thus: a) quality one way inbound links, and b) higher position in search engines.

Purpose : Your main aim is just to increase your site's Page Rank or to drive traffic to your site or both? Or is it for prestige and brand awareness? In fact, most directories won't provide you with decent traffic, even big and popular directories Yahoo! or Business.com or Microsoft bCentral Small Business Directory may not increase your sites' traffic much. The biggest benefit you can get from directory submission is for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) purposes.

Choose the most appropriate Category for your site

Web directories are sorted by topic and editors frequently take great pride in ensuring that everything stays well categorized. So, put up your website in the right category. The search engines look at the various links that are on the page on which you are listed. This can lead to better rankings.

Write multiple titles, descriptions with various keywords and mixed. Have at least 10-15 variations. When submitting mix and match titles and descriptions. If search engines find hundreds of links with the same anchor text and description they will simply discount the links. It will be waste of your time and effort to submit to these sites.

Check if the directory has already been index by major search engines. You may also like to also note how many pages are already indexed. Ensure the page rank and inbound links of the directory you are submitting. Certainly a higher page rank and link popularity directory is the best. If you are submitting for link building, do NOT submit to directories that uses the 'nofollow' for their site listings. Do not just submit your niche keywords, but also include those high volume keywords as it may provide a good source of FREE web traffic.
