How to Contact your Market on Social Networking Sites

Submitted by dianeforster

Social Networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace revolve around the publication of peoples interests, their thoughts and their experiences. These sites exist because of our need to express ourselves and receive feedback from others. Just like in the real world online networking can also bring great business opportunities.

Social Networking sites are a great place to rustle up some new customers. Because people list their interests and hobbies (and increasingly their business concerns) you are able to identify people who will have an interest in the services you provide. Contacting these people would certainly be more effective than a blind marketing effort. However the best results are not achieved by a straightforward mail shot or posting on their pages, in fact given that these sites a Social network sites a direct advertising effort may actually be counter-productive - imagine if you were hounded by salespeople in your local pub and you will get how this can seem.

Instead you will have to make sure that you are also on these sites with the intention of networking, you are not the only member of a site with a business aim in mind and by keeping the information in your social network page genuine and honest it may actually happen that some people will approach you for your services rather than you chasing clients down.

So you must create honest profiles that are as complete as possible. Allowing some personal information to be accessed is good because it shows that your interest in the Social side of the network is genuine. Announce your profile through your blog and website to encourage existing customers to add your profile to their friends and favourites. Finally be active on the network, join interest groups so that your potential customers can see what you are interested in. Be focussed in your interest groups and only join those that you are prepared to contribute to.

Only now will your profile be genuine enough that an attempt to contact will not automatically be rejected by other members. Now is the time to seek out people who may be interested in your services and products. Within some networks this should be fairly straightforward, simply request the link and hope that it is accepted. A good tactic may be to request information rather than offer a product so that the contact is not seen as a sales pitch.

By not being too pushy and working to build up genuine relationships, in effect doing what the social networking sites were put there to enable, you will find that you will be able to cultivate a more solid base of customers who's loyalty will be far greater than that resulting from a more typical marketing campaign.
