When it comes down to it, everyone wants the same thing out of their website: unique and interesting content, search engine rankings when people search for their products or services, and conversions from online traffic. No matter how cutting-edge or tech savvy, or lack thereof, your marketing is, there is one thing you can do consistently that will trump any new hot tip or trick in the industry. In the words of one our favorite clients, all SEO should be implemented with a certain degree of common sense.

The first step in utilizing intelligent common sense is to look at what the search engine spiders are indexing. They like relevant and quality links, unique and interesting content, and they are looking for any buzz about your links and content from other related sites. Most businesses are using the internet to let people know they exist and what they offer. Choosing the relevant keywords that pertain to your business is a great start. With the appropriate keywords, it can be easier than you expect to be found by your potential public audience.

Ask any content writer and they will tell you that the most important part of optimizing your site and getting ranked well in the engines is great content. Write one new piece of content everyday and your website will climb up the rankings. This is not only an important part of SEO, but it is, in one writer's opinion, the most valuable one. Would you go to a library that had boring books? Would you pay to see Land Before Time 24: Littlefoot's First Date? Ok, my intern has confirmed that she would see that movie, but I digress. Content isn't just text. Content is video, case studies, downloadable PDF's, shopping carts, widgets, success stories, and keyword rich images. As long as it is relevant, they will come.
Another important implementation of common sense is to find appropriate ways to tell people that you have great content on your website, without trying to sell them your dog's fur. Social media is always a great way to interact with your customer base without pitching them. Creating links also helps getting your content out there. Non-competing websites will want to link good, original content. Each link to your site is like a "vote" or recommendation. It also tells the search engines that your site is important and valuable.
With the knowledge of these simple techniques and the use of common sense, you will find your website ranked well after some time and the ol' college try. If you don't have the time, effort or common sense for search engine optimization, it may be time to invest in a great SEO firm who does. Volacci is the leading Drupal SEO company and very passionate about your online success. By the end of your contract you will have at least as much additional business from your web site as you spend on our services... or we'll work for free until you do.
