If you have recently opened a business and your target audience is the Japanese market, it doesn't matter if you are opening a business in Japan or in US or anywhere in the world. As long as you have a website for your business, it can reach any target market anywhere worldwide.
The only major thing that you have to consider is the language barrier. This may be the reason why such an advanced country like Japan, is only just starting to emerge in e-commerce and online marketing world. Today, most websites catering to Japanese community have been translated from Japanese to English and vice-versa to make their websites more accessible to their target audience.

Should you do the translation yourself or have a professional do it for you? Your best bet would be to get someone who knows what they are doing. Translating is more than converting language word per word, the words should have some flow and it should make sense. So, unless Japanese and English are both your strongest language, leave the translation to the professionals. A professional translator should deliver these things:
  • To translate your existing website's contents from English to Japanese or to develop a totally new website that offers both Japanese and English language pages. This way, e-consumers can choose the language they're most comfortable to.


  • Identify SEO keywords, preferably effective Japanese keywords that are widely used so that your website will be easily searched.

  • Professional copywriting services that emphasize on Japanese keywords and uses appropriate tone for Japanese audience


  • Meta tags in Japanese

  • Programming script customization

  • Alternatively, adding a language translation tool in your website is a good idea. This way, your e-consumers can effectively translate from Japanese to English or to any other language then back to Japanese again. There are two ways of starting website translation to Japanese language

  • Web-based translation tools offered by Google, AltaVista, Babelfish, WorldLingo and dictionary.com – provide a translation box in their website where your visitors can add a script or paragraph that they need to be translated. Doing this is a long process and not advisable for big websites.

  • Or, you can integrate a translation form which will help you in website translation from English to Japanese; this will not require visitors to go to an external page or website for the text translation. For effective website translation, the best option is Google – they can translate languages from English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Korean and Chinese into Japanese and vice-versa.

  • Japan has always been a fast-paced country; always the first when it comes to technology. They have always been the first to invent and buy the most advanced technology. Language should not be a barrier for such a competitive country.


    That is why website translation is such an important aspect to capture the Asian market, specifically the Japanese market. Most businesses that cater to the Japanese market thrive in e-commerce. Although Japan is a bit new to e-commerce or internet/virtual market, the potential is great.
