LTL Shipment versus FTL Shipping

Submitted by Jack Copper
Fri, 19 Mar 2010

As you know, an LTL shipment carries cargo that weighs less than FTL. Sometimes, parcel carriers and LTL carriers might seem to have similar modes of operation, especially if you are a new shipper. So, it is a good idea to collect more information about the LTL model of transportation.

To use the freight services for your maximum benefit, you need to choose a reputed freight service provider. These companies have definite strategies to deliver LTL shipments.

Once you choose a service provider, you should know the processes involved next. They are inspected to check if they conform to the prescribed weight limits and other details given in the paperwork that accompanies the shipment. Then, the freight is loaded onto an outbound trailer that would in turn transfer it to a connection or a delivering terminal. But, in general, LTL takes more time for transit then FTL.

If you are desirous to transport your cargo to far-flung international destinations, then you can opt for ocean freight as well. Another option that you can use for international shipments is ocean freight services. This type of freight service is suitable for oversized, heavy-weight or special cargo.

If you are planning to ship letters, small parcels weighing very less and other important mails, you can choose small package courier service offered by local courier companies in case of local addresses and international service provider if you are shipping to international destinations. You can calculate the UPS rates for shipping using on-line software.
