New Parameter for Handling Duplicate Content

Submitted by smozwt

There were only two way to avoid duplicate content form your site are 301 redirect and rel="canonical". Now one more feature is there form Google which helps you to avoid duplicate content, and that is parameter handling.

With parameter handling, you can see which parameter Google believes should be overlooked or not overlooked at crawling time, and to overwrite our suggestions if necessary. You have placed URL structure for your content is like this:

ww.mysite.com/product.php?item=fruit-apple

In your site, the same content is displayed on another URL for the user who navigates in your sites. The CMS system of your site may embed parameters like

ww.mysite.com/product.php?item=fruit-apple&category=food-juicy
ww.mysite.com/product.php?item=fruit-apple&trackingid=9874&sessionid=1234

With this new parameter handling feature you can tell Search Engine's spider which tracking id or session id it has to ignore. This way you can avoid duplicate content problem of your site.

rel="canonical" this way is great to use when you want to avoid duplicate content issue. The differences between the two options are:

• rel="canonical" has to be put on each page, whereas parameter handling is set at the host level
• rel="canonical" is respected by many search engines, whereas parameter handling suggestions are only provided to Google
Use which option works best for you; it's fine to use both if you want to be very thorough. This attribute helps a lot in SEO point of view.
