The current economic turmoil has the world wondering what the future holds. This sentiment is reflected across industries and very soon, if not already, the IT world is poised to take a hit. In these turbulent times, more so than ever, businesses are forced to make budgetary spending cuts. Advertising and marketing, while indispensible, is sure to see cutbacks, which demands that managers get more creative with their budgets. More relevant now than ever, is the debate on whether a search engine optimization SEO strategy is best kept in-house or if outsource SEO is the way to go.

SEO marketing, for the uninitiated, is a marketing strategy that aims at organically increasing search engine rankings of a website. The obvious advantage a higher ranking brings is increased website traffic and increased exposure and/or sales. Search engines like Google have long been the start, middle and end for many Internet users. Thus, improved search rankings can have a tremendous impact on any website and, consequently, many firms have sought SEO consulting. Usually, the first step in SEO website promotion involves the marketing department asking the IT department to chalk out a strategy.

The underlying problem with using the in-house techies is their lack of constant exposure to SEO information across the web. On the other hand, an SEO company consists of a group of professionals who specialize in search engines. They monitor every tweak, every patch and every fix to the major search engines, and the methodologies implemented and tactics used evolve with the playing field. A common misconception is that an outsource SEO company’s charges would far exceed the cost of hiring an IT professional to perform in-house SEO. This notion has been lambasted across the Net as websites have quickly realized that hiring an SEO company proves to be far more value for money.

An outsource SEO firm employs web designers and marketing consultants, thus drawing from the variety of skills each individual brings to the project. Of course like the multitude of Internet scam artists, SEO too suffers from problems inherent to the Web. But with a little research it is simple to verify a company’s credentials. As business gets more cutthroat, the most efficient means of driving sales is the Internet and hence, search engines. Positioning a website for a top search engine ranking is a viable and cost effective marketing strategy that makes sense at a time where pennies are pinched.
