Search Engine Optimization - Understanding Search Engine OptimizationSubmitted by Obinna Heche Thu, 26 Nov 2009
Search engine optimization is the process of getting a site more traffic from search engines via the main unpaid search results which in turn are called natural or organic search results. SEO techniques typically attempt to get specific phrases to rank highly on search result pages. If effective, these natural listings account for almost 80% of all search engine traffic to web sites. Therefore. it is an area of search engine marketing that deals with increasing the number of visitors to your website from Google, Yahoo and others.
Undoubtedly, it takes is a long, carefully planned and executed method for generating more website traffic. It involves maximizing your websites structure, content, code, and links. When done properly, various pages within a website bubble up to the top of the search engine results pages. Ideally a top 10 placement will be achieved. However, it may take anywhere from 30-90 days to achieve high ranking due to the time it takes for spiders to correctly index your site. Ranking takes time and is unfortunately a measure beyond any search optimization and submission companies control. Effective optimization and high rankings do not happen overnight. Be wary of SEO firms that claim to get you results within 2 to 3 weeks. A lot of preliminary work must be done before your site can be submitted. Because it takes a long time to update their indexes, how then could a company guarantee to get you high ranking within 2 to 3 weeks? Major search engines, such as Google and Yahoo, will index millions of pages and respond to tens of millions of searches each day. To find this information, they use a special software robots commonly referred to as spiders to build a results page based on those keywords. These spiders are constantly being updated to provide users with the most accurate results when conducting a search. Search engine optimization can be very complex and confusing. The truth is, companies such as Google never reveal exactly how they rank websites. If they did, everyone would do the same thing and mass chaos would ensue. In fact, back in the 90s, so many people figured out the tricks that many searches ended up being useless. One of the main reasons that Google is so successful is that their algorithms are extremely accurate and efficient, though they are occasionally fooled sometimes. However, the real question here is, why do you need it? Well, if your site is not properly optimized, your site will not rank well, and will not attract new customers. It is the act of making a website come up higher in the search result pages. Search optimization ensures that your website has all of the necessary ranking criteria to appeal to search engines needs.
