Anchor Text can be described as a statement or text you click on a webpage, which takes you to another page or website. So it is a link to another site or page. Anchor text is considered very important by all the major search engines. It gives your visitors useful information about the content of the page you're linking to and so it helps your website to achieve higher ranks in all search engines.

The problem is we have found is that many of the people that use articles on web sites, blogs and newsletters are not savvy enough to use the html the right way so your anchor text winds up as a dead link. An absolute url is a url that begins with http: and ends with .com or the file name. In this way, the link becomes clickable whenever it is used.

How did this happen?

Well, many of Bush's detractors put the anchor text "failure" on their websites and linked it to Bush's biography. Over time, and with enough anchor text on many, many sites linked to Bush's biography, now Bush's biography is listed number one in Google for the keyword "failure."

This teaches us an important lesson. If you want to get listed number one in the search engines for a keyword, then pick a keyword you want to be listed for, and then put a link to your website behind that anchor text keyword on hundreds or thousands of websites.

What does this mean? Well, it means that, to get the absolute most bang for your buck out of each and every link pointed to your site, you should do your best to make sure that the anchor text used for each inbound link is relevant to the page that link is pointing to. This applies not only to external links (those from a different site pointing to a page within your site), but to internal links as well (those links pointing from one page of your site to another page on your site).

A blogger with a large readership tried to optimize his site for the keywords, "internet marketing tips" so he made an offer to his readers. If they would link to his blog with a link that used "Internet Marketing Tips", he would link back to them. Because this blogger got lots of linkbacks, and they all were with the anchor text, "Internet Marketing Tips", there was a problem.

Important to understanding how backlinking works in terms of SEO strategy then, is understanding what makes a link a high quality link. A high quality link to your site is one that will include one or more of your website keywords in the anchor text. (The anchor text of a link is the actual part of the link that is clicked and takes the person doing the clicking to your website). The reason a link with the keyword in the anchor text is given more weight than links without your keywords in the anchor text is that it appears that the links are coming from sites with related information when the keywords are found within the anchor text.

Having a reliable webhost also plays a part in the picture, you want as much Uptime as possible so that when the spiders do visit you they're not getting 404's.

So scan through your website now. Is there any hyper linked text that doesn't clearly relate to the page it links to? Change it to relevant anchor text, and you're on your way to building a stronger online presence with smart search engine optimization!
