Social Media During the General election

Have you heard there is going to be a General Election? Well unless you're sitting in the dark ages and don't turn on your television or leave the house, I'm pretty sure you will have seen at least some of the hype about the three main parties, dare I say it; Labour, Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives.

In this highly technological age one might wonder if the voting public can in anyway be influenced by technology, when it comes to casting their vote in the British General Election. I'm not talking about subliminal messaging, as of course that would be highly illegal, but the well known world of social media.

There is no doubt that social media optimisation is a powerful online marketing tool utilised by many companies in differing industries, but in the build up to the British General Election one might wonder what impact if any social media optimisation could have on the election results.

In my opinion there are two main ways in which social media optimisation could potentially influence the General Election results.

The first of which in is the vast amount of publicity relating to the General Election on the two main social networking sites. Facebook and Twitter have in excess of 400 million users around the world, a large proportion of British internet users frequent the popular sites including a high number of first time voters. Facebook and Twitter attract a vast demographic of users and the first time voters that may not have come across the various debates on television or perhaps switched the television over at the slightest mention of the election are being engaged in online conversations, groups and debates regarding the political parties and there manifestos. For this reason there is a high possibility that social networking could encourage first time voters to utilise their vote and in turn influence their choice.

Those Facebook and Twitter users that have visited the voting booths before play a part in my second theory. There is no doubt that both social networking sites will be utilised as sounding boards both for political parties and the general public's opinions, but can a good argument or online effect the results of the General Election by Influencing established voters to change their allegiance?

One thing is for sure, social media optimisation is taking off in a big way, we'll have to wait and to what extent the likes of Facebook and Twitter affect the General Election but with this proven online marketing tool having positive effects on businesses worldwide it undoubtedly will be a contributory factor.
