One of the terms used in analyzing and monitoring website's traffic is bounce rate. Basically, it has two variations: "bounce rate for a single page" which is considered as the number of visitors who views a page and leave within its specific timeout period without exploring its other pages divided by the total number of visitors who entered the site at that page and "bounce rate for a website" which is calculated through the number web site visitors who visit only a single page of a website per session divided by the total number of web site visits.
There are many cases of how visitors can be considered as "bounce" by Google Analytics tracking software. These include when a visitor clicks a link on a page that is pointing to a different website, closes its window or tab, types a new URL on the URL address box of the page to bounce away on the site, clicks the "back button" to leave the site or exceeds on the alloted session timeout of the site's page. Usually, thirty (30) minutes is the most common used session timeout for every site. For this instance, if a visitor views a site and doesn't explore its other pages or leave his browser idle for more than 30 minutes, then this will be considered as bounce rate by Google.
For most websites who deal with selling online products or offering online services, bounce rate is one of the main factors used to see of how quality the content of its page or site is. It's also a basis to see what's the impact of their offered services or products to their visitors or customers. A high bounce rate is usually a bad sign of a poor quality webpage. This only shows that it lacks something on its content that's why the visitors or searchers don't find the information that they are looking for and just leave the site. Another reason is that its webpage's usability is not good due to its keywords used don't correspond with the content of its landing page. So in order to decrease its bounce rate for about 10% higher, its content should provide relevant and quality information to its readers or visitors and its usability should need to be improved. If a website has managed to lower its bounce rate, then this may lead to a remarkable increase on its site's conversion.
