Sex. An attention grabbing word if ever there was one. It’s an activity that’s been around for at least as long as humanity. Owing to humanity’s’ compulsive need to be structured around a hierarchy, and for rules to either break or obey, the sexual act has long been subject to stringent regulations.

There is no denying that the regulation of some acts is absolutely necessary. Without laws governing the sexual exploitation of minors, or violent sexual acts against others without their consent, there would be social anarchy. Other laws are discriminatory and impinge in the rights of people to live freely and be accepted in open society. Rules against homosexuality are a good example of this. And yet other laws, which still exist, are down right bizarre.

The USA is a country with some excellent rules regarding sex and the various activities associated with it. In Bakersfield, California, anyone who has intercourse with Satan must use a condom. I doubt that the primary concern behind this one was the transmission of sexual diseases. It’s more probable that the motivation was to prevent the birth of the anti-Christ. Although, as we know, in California anything goes, the reasons could be far more obscure.

In Minnesota, it’s against the law for men to have intercourse with a live fish. Which raises the question: what if the fish is dead? Is it acceptable then?
Newcastle, Wyoming, has a law that prohibits couples from having sex in a store’s walk-in meat freezer. This helps to maintain the basic standards of hygiene and prevents customers from selecting the wrong piece of meat.

A very curious law is the one in Nevada that makes it illegal for any member of the Legislature to conduct official business while wearing a penis costume when they are in session. One has to wonder if this was such a regular occurrence that it needed regulating, and in what way it disrupted proceedings to the extent that it elicited complaints.

The USA isn’t the only country to try and govern unusual sexual practices, or even normal ones. Many years ago, Tibetan law decreed that all women prostitute themselves to gain sexual experience in preparation for marriage. In Guam, there are men who are employed on a full-time basis to travel the country and have sex with virgins. This is an essential community service. The virgins pay them for it, as it’s forbidden for virgins to get married. And around the world Christians pray for their souls.

One that is sure to be a hit with women is the law in Hong Kong that allows a wife to kill her husband if he has an affair. The only stipulation is that she may only use her bare hands, no weapons of any kind are allowed. In ancient Israel, adultery was punishable by stoning.

It’s worth considering whether Greek men might have preferred death by stoning to the punishment that was inflicted on them for being unfaithful in marriage. They had their pubic hair removed and a large radish inserted in their rectums. The symbolism of the radish is a mystery. Perhaps the discomfort and loss of dignity were enough not to require any symbolic meaning in the type of veg used.

Considering the blatant disregard for all rights that defined the ancient rules regarding sex, it’s a pleasure to live in a world where in some places dogs and cats are only allowed to have sex if they have a permit. Or where it’s against the law for two pigs to have sex on the property of a city airport. It’s interesting that we not only feel the need to regulate our own reproduction procedures, but also those of animals. It’s also interesting that people could be so sensitive about such a simple act that they were offended by it in beasts. Whatever the underlying motivations behind these bizarre laws, it’s good to know that they still provide a valuable service in terms of entertainment.
