You just got a vital email from the wife of the recently departed Nigerian head of state. It seems that the former Nigerian leader's family is being stressed and deprived of access to the last of the family funds. She is very much seeking someone outside of the country to aid secure this $38 million dollar fund. If you are keen to help, she will prize you with a substantial portion of the $38 million dollars.

If you are an astute and experienced Internet user, you will right away realize that this is a scam. These people send thousands and thousands of emails looking for that one sucker who has more gluttony than common sense. I personally get quite a lot of Nigerian scam messages a week -- at times several a day.

This scam has become a large business in Nigeria and a number of other small nations. It seems that, they find sufficient people who fall for the scams to keep them going. So what is the Nigerian scam and what do the scammers expect to achieve?

The Nigerian scam or 419 scam (419 is the Nigerian lawful code that outlaws the scam) as it is frequently known as has been around from long prior to the prevalence of Internet access. The scam letters were previously sent by postal mail or fax, but as Internet spammers have learned, email costs roughly nothing to send in mass. The Nigerian scam has one or more of the goals listed below:

* Bilking: Once a scammer has the victim paying attention, they will begin asking for cash to cover a variety of fees supposedly wanted to obtain the millions of dollars. A lot of people have shelled out thousands of dollars prior to realizing something was amiss.

* Extortion: The scammers will try to get the victim to travel to Nigeria and will frequently convince them that they don't require a visa. The scammers will bribe customs officials and get the victim into the country unlawfully. When the victim tries to leave, the scammers will inquire for big sums of money to get them out without lawful problems.

* Ransom: The Nigerian scammers might abduct and hold the victim for ransom.

It must be clear that these are dangerous people. You must never react to them in any way. Getting stuff for free is great, but the sort of greed that deludes people into trusting they will get a good-looking reward for doing nearly nothing is dangerous and stupid. It is much better to be elegant and stay secure.
