At one time, websites were quite primitive in their design. Today, with the advancements and enhancements in website design, a number of new and unique innovations have come into being. One of the most appreciated concepts is that of website accessibility. For those not familiar with the term, website accessibility refers to making a website easier to navigate for those who may suffer from disabilities. For those looking to redesign their website in such a manner, here are ten quick tips:

For the visually impaired it may be helpful to provide software on the website that reads the text out loud. This is the equivalent of turning the website into an online audio book and it can prove very helpful to those with limited vision.

Similarly, for those that have hearing disabilities, the inclusion of software that will allow the visitor to read a textual presentation of any audio portions of the site. Yes, just like the aforementioned audio book comparison, this could be considered an online version of closed captioning.

For individuals who may suffer from physical limitations, special interface devices can be employed to replace a mouse of keyboard. This way, those with dexterity problems can easily navigate and browse the web.

When you are crafting an accessible website, be sure to add a number of visual displays such as images, pictures, etc. This will aid the individual's navigation of the site since online illustrations can provide clear identifications of what is on the site.

In some cases, there will be individuals who may not be disabled but are at a severe disadvantage based on their physical location. Specifically, an area my have a very low bandwidth capability or network reliability issues. As such, modifying a website so it can be easily accessed in such locations could prove helpful to those in the region.

It is also helpful to clearly display where the main content of the site if you are looking to make it more accessible. This can reduce the confusion level and allow those relying on special devices to navigate the site to do so much easier.

The importance of testing the usability cannot be overstated. Many times, when you install accessibility software and programs, there may be bugs present. A series of tests can usually locate problem issues.

There will also be special color considerations to an accessible website. Namely, any information that is depicted in color must also contain scripts that make it understood in the absence of color. This will aid those with vision problems related to viewing colors.

It is also important to reduce the presence of items on the site that blink or flash. Such components can prove distracting to someone that needs to follow special accessibility instructions.

And, of course, it is important to know your own website design limitations. If you are not well versed in designing or developing a fully accessible website, turn the responsibilities over to professionals. They can deliver a solid finished product.

Again, the ability to design a website handled to those with special needs has arrived. Always take such strategies into consideration when you are crafting a new site.
