Web design has been considered by many web designers as an art. For a lot of web designers out there, taking their designs to the next level is their utmost goal. By competing for the “Best Web Design” awards, these web designers are beginning to forget the true purpose of designing a website.
Because of the growing success of internet marketing, web design tools such as Flash are beginning to become more and more popular throughout the web. Flash is among the many applications that made web design more fun and easier because of its capability to provide more life to a website. This will make it more attractive to visitors. But using “Too Much of a Good Thing” could also become a bad thing, especially in the web.
Because of our drive to design the most unique and attractive website, we sometimes forget our purpose. We always have to remember that web design is not merely to win an award or anything. Though an outstanding web design does have its own advantages, we have to keep in mind that we do this for conversion, speed, credibility, readability, and success, not just for art’s sake.
Here are 5 common elements that a web designer should not forget when designing a website.
#1 Purpose
Because of web designers being compelled to design a website that’ll stand out above the rest, they sometimes forget the purpose of building that website in the first place. The first thing that you should always have to bear in mind in designing a website is “Who will use it”.
Determining the target audience of the website is important before designing the website itself. Let’s say you’re targeting preschoolers, what kind of website design do you have in mind? Would you conceptualize a corporate design? Or would you create a design with full of colors, big fonts, and drawings?
Asking this question is important because web designers should be aware of their target audience. By being aware of your target audiences, you could easily think what is most appropriate with your target market.
The second thing that you should remember is the “Purpose of the Website”. You should make it clear what will be the use of your website. Would it be for learning purposes? Would it be for discussing topics? Or for selling different kinds of services? Whatever the purpose it may be, the design should encourage the visitors to do what the site is supposed to do. Otherwise, an overhaul is in order.

#2 The Design
One of the talents that a professional web designer should be able to do is to convey thoughts merely through the design of the website. This is very important because, according to studies, visitors rarely stay and read all that’s written on a web page. Visitors usually spend 8-10 seconds to scan and scroll the whole web page to find out if that site holds what they are looking for. If they don’t find it, then there’s no reason for them to prolong their stay. Your purpose is to guide them through their goal in finding what they are looking for.
Remember that in designing a website, it doesn’t only involve splashes, flash animations, or graphics. A good design also involves consideration of things such as content. For optimum readability, the website should possess both elements of artistry and intellect so visitors could easily find what they are looking for without too much effort.
#3 Search Engine Friendly
The design of the website should also be as friendly with search engines as it is with visitors. Techniques commonly used in SEO include Google Site Map, and text based navigation if possible.

If you’re planning on making your navigation bar made purely on flash, then it would be necessary to include another one that is purely text based. But if you dont want this, then its much more appropriate to make it simpler. This way, your site would look cleaner and more search engine oriented.

#4 Fast
One of the key elements of being successful in internet marketing is making your website load much faster. This is important because visitors would immediately leave once they sense that the loading would take longer than expected.
Generally, making customers wait can ruin a business’ credibility. This goes the same for internet businesses.

Letting them wait for the page to finish loading can make your visitors push the back button and search for another site. This is what every professional web developer is trying to avoid.
To make a website load faster, letting go of some high quality images and splashes could help. You might be surprised that even without those elements, your website could still function properly and attract as much visitors as it should be. Speed is everything when it comes to the internet, so make sure that your website is optimized for it and visitors would be much happier to come back when they needed your services again.
#5 True Nature of Web Design
Many have been led to believe that web design is all about the layout of every page, the overall design of the website, and the theme. This is partially true, but the true nature of web design is about the structure of site. The graphic design of the website is merely a part of it.
Web design is about the flow or the process. It’s all about the way you guide your visitors around your site. So it isn’t only about graphics, splashes, or flash animations, it’s all about talking to them through your design. Every professional web designer knows this, so you should too.
