$2.25M Awarded to Family of Naval Shipyard Worker

Submitted by justice
Tue, 17 Mar 2009

A jury in New York City recently awarded the family of a man, who was allegedly exposed to asbestos at work, $2.25 million.

The suit claimed that as a result of his exposure, the man developed pleural mesothelioma and wrongfully died.

Asbestos cancer Exposure in the Workplace

Leonard Schafer, 73, was employed at the New York Naval Shipyard in Brooklyn, New York when he was supposedly exposed to asbestos.

Asbestos is a harmful substance that is linked with a fatal form of cancer known as mesothelioma cancer.

“Mr. Shafer endured pain and suffering that spanned an eighteen month time period from the time he was diagnosed until the time of the death,” says attorney for the family, Carmen St. George.

Workers Unaware of Asbestos Cancer Causing Problems

Like many other workers who were employed at shipyards, Shafer was never given protective gear to wear and was unaware of the dangers of asbestos cancer.

In the case, the jury found that Shafer’s illness and untimely death was due to his exposure at work, which was foreseeable to the company.
