Finding the best firewood for your fires will depend on a number of different factors. To help ensure that you find the best wood possible, we have put together a list of tips to consider:

The best firewood for fires will always be seasoned firewood. Many people overlook the importance of drying out their wood and fail to get the best value of their wood. By drying out the wood, you allow the wood to burn more smoothly giving greater warmth and less smoke than it would otherwise have. For this reason, before you even consider choosing a specific type of wood, you should make sure you have allocated time to allow the wood to dry out. This dry out period will vary depending on the wood; however, most experts recommend at least 6 months for most softwoods and over a year for hardwoods.

To help aid you in drying out your wood, you should consider purchasing a log holder or firewood rack. These help raise the wood off the ground allowing for the air to better circulate within the wood. This will also help reduce the risk of mildew or mold growth as well. By creating seasoned firewood, you will be well on your way to get the best wood possible.

Beyond seasoning the wood, you need to also determine what your fire burning needs are. If you will only occasionally be burning wood, most softwoods will be very effective for your fires. However, if you will be having more fires than just a few, you should consider purchasing hardwoods. Hardwoods burn longer because they are denser and provide a longer lasting heating source. Although they tend to cost a little bit more than softwoods, you get more value for your money as they tend to burn longer.

After deciding on softwoods or hardwoods, you should then look to find quality versions of each. The best performing softwoods are usually firs and pines. It is recommended you avoid cedar as this tends to be smokier than other woods. As for hardwoods, the best choices are most oaks, hickory, and walnut. However, you should avoid white oak when you can because it is inferior. Ideally, by sticking to these recommend woods, you will get better wood from the start. Once you have decided on the wood, your hard work is done. From here, it will only be a matter of locating a supplier of that particular type of wood.

Remember that regardless of the wood chosen, be sure you make it seasoned firewood as the extra effort will help make your fires go that much better. In the quest for the best firewood possible, taking extra measures like using firewood stands or log holders is critical.
