There seems to be a plethora of TV reality shows around at the moment, one of them is called Cheaters. It is a reality show set in Dallas in which scorned lovers hire a private investigation agency to inquire about their spouse or so-called soul mate to see if he/she is being disloyal. Yet do private eyes just target adulterous lovers? What other work does a private investigator, or sometimes called a PI, investigate? I will attempt to explain the job and the role of a private detective.

Their work proposes to search for the truth. During this search, a private investigator, must maintain impartiality if he is to perform his task competently. Mostly, it is ironic that clients of private detectives do not want the truth; they just want to gain ground. Like this attitude, some of the clients in the program Cheaters have a hostile attitude. The work of a private investigator and his agency is to turn up the facts and help their client succeed.

Revealing the truth is a double-edged sword for the PI. He or she is remunerated to disclose the facts even if revealing those facts can damage their client's chances of winning, especially a lawsuit. Clients need to be told both the good and the bad news. There is nothing worse for an attorney than to turn up at court and be confronted with some spiteful statement or fact that he should have been aware of. The private investigator has been hired because a lawyer requires all the facts beforehand. Win or lose, it is the private investigator's job to locate information and let the case grow on its own.

Imagine the opposing side of a lawsuit wins in court, it does not infer that the PI did not do his job as well as he should have. It merely signifies they performed their line of work to the best standards for their occupation and to the utmost of their power. After all, the private detective can not determine the decision of a judge or jury.
