It is said that one million people each year in the UK need emergency medical care as the result of a head injury and about one in four people who are suffering from a head injury need to be admitted to hospital.

The treatment that you will receive for a head injury depends on the type and severity of the injury that you are suffering from. This may include observation at home or in hospital, first aid treatment i.e. stitching of wounds and medication such as painkillers, corticosteroids and antibiotics

One thing that is certain when it comes to head injuries; you should always visit a hospital or your doctor. Whether you have a minor or major head injury it is important as you could have underlying problems that will only be picked up when you have tests done. Also by seeing your doctor you will have a medical record of your injuries so that if you wish to make a claim for compensation you will have the backing of your doctor.

Some examples of the head injuries that you may be suffering from are concussion, epidural haematoma, subdural haematoma and cerebral contusion as well as diffuse axonal injury.

One of the main causes of a head injury is a road traffic accident; other causes are often sports related and industrial accidents as well as other work related accidents. However you end up suffering from a head injury these head injuries will either be closed or open. A closed head injury describes a head injury where the skull is not broken; whereas an open head injury occurs when an object pierces the skull and goes on to breach the durra mater. Your head injury also has the potential of causing a skull fracture, which may or may not be associated with the injury that has occurred to your brain. Two examples of the type of fracture that you might be suffering from are linear or depressed skull fractures.

Some of the main symptoms that you will more than likely experience when suffering from a head injury are as follows:

• Headache with nausea and vomiting
• Blurred or double vision
• Slurred speech
• Confusion or drowsiness
• Loss of consciousness
• Blood or clear fluid from the ears or nose

The amount of symptoms that you will be suffering from varies greatly depending on the severity of your injury but no matter what symptoms you are suffering from the restrictions about what you can and cannot do after returning home from treatment is the same.

When you are allowed home after suffering from a head injury it is important that you gain plenty of rest, avoid stressful situations and don’t stay alone for the first 48 hours. It is also important that you don’t take any sleeping pills or play contact sports such as rugby or football; you should avoid sports such as these at least for the first three weeks that you return home. You also can’t return to work, college or school until you have completely recovered and you are unable to drive a car, motorbike or operate machinery until you feel like you are completely recovered.

If you have suffered from a head injury then you may be entitled to make a claim for compensation. Everyone has a legal right to make a claim for compensation after suffering from a head injury. So if you would like to know more about putting in a claim for compensation get in touch with a legal team today, who will be able to guide you through the compensation process.
