{Entering America, several ways exist to gain permanent residency. These avenues are employment, family, asylum, and diversity.}
Employment

The rationale here is that a shortage of American workers provides opportunities for skilled foreign workers. The non-immigrant visa is often a quicker route to residency. Non-immigrant visas are categorized according to preference levels. First preference is a person who possesses extraordinary ability. Second preference includes Advanced Degree holders. Third Preference includes those with a valid Bachelor’s Degree, or else skilled workers. Fourth Preference includes Special Immigrants, such as religious workers. Fifth Preference deals with Employment Creation and invites investors.

Family

United States citizens and permanent residents can sponsor immediate relatives in the interests of family unity. Preference in these cases relates to “blood” relationships such as spouses and minor children, unmarried adult children, married adult children, and brothers and sisters.

Asylum
Asylum is the decision to seek refuge in the U.S. when fleeing persecution in one’s home country. This status is granted only if the refugee is from a preferred country. The United States maintains a list of preferred countries.
Diversity

Diversity is a lottery given to nationals of those countries from where two few emigrants are deemed to be emigrating from. Each country has a quota for immigration to the United States.
