Mesothelioma & Asbestos Exposure

Submitted by David Salt

The inhalation of asbestos fibres can cause several different ailments to arise in those exposed to the fibres. One such ailment is Mesothelioma. Those people that have contracted this devastating disease are entitled to compensation. They should seek the services of a solicitor in order to file their claim. Your solicitor will have an understanding of the law and asbestos compensation and can advise you accordingly.

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that strikes the lungs, or more specifically the tissue surrounding the lungs. Mesothelioma is caused only by asbestos. There is no other possible cause that can be cited. Like all other asbestos complications, Mesothelioma takes several years to develop. This time frame can be anywhere from 15 to 35 years.

There are four different types of Mesothelioma. The basic difference in the four types centers on the part of the body affected. Specifically, all four types are affecting body tissues. One type of Mesothelioma is known as pleural malignant Mesothelioma. This is the more common of the four types of Mesothelioma. Pleural malignant Mesothelioma affects the lungs' surrounding tissue. A second type of Mesothelioma is peritoneal Mesothelioma which afflicts your abdominal tissue. Pericardial, a third type, is present in the tissues adjacent to the heart. The fourth and final type of Mesothelioma is tunica vaginalis Mesothelioma. This type is only present in males. Tunica vaginalis Mesothelioma is found in the lining surrounding the testicles.

Mesothelioma is caused primarily from asbestos exposure. The material is actually a natural mineral found in the environment. It was used many years ago in the construction of some building materials. People working with these building materials had the greatest risk of contracting Mesothelioma later in life. However, the risk is still real for those who were exposed to the material from working in or entering buildings where the asbestos fibres were present. When the asbestos fibres are disturbed, they enter the air. Once airborne they can enter the body and settle themselves in either the lungs or even the stomach. Here the presence of the asbestos fibres causes irritation to the body. This irritation then can later develop into Mesothelioma.

About the Author

Mesothelioma is a truly terrible condition to be faced with, however, since it has usually been brought on by the negligence of a third party (failing to remove deadly asbestos from the working conditions) there is usually the opportunity to persue a compensation claim.
