Lawyer advertising is a widely disputed subject. If we compare the legal industry with other industries, getting a law practice setup is much more difficult than say with the IT industry. An IT company can work for only one customer at a time but obviously the same luxuries aren’t feasible to a young lawyer. Serious clients will require a lawyer with a name, experience and reputation. So the lawyers need to advertise and not just some advertising, it must be effective and must bring new clients that are vital for their line of law practice.

On some point of course it is easier for an attorney because he offers solutions to some real life problems, so the ads can be targeted to a niche market and with a target audience. That is to say it is way easier for lawyers to advertise their practice in comparison to advertising for some new food snack or a revolutionary gadget.

A lawyer also needs clients interested in solving the problems that he is experienced in. It will make the whole process easier and raise the chance of success if the advertising was more informative to clients rather than in s. When creating an ad it is better to focus on some smart and creative idea than just shock the possible client.

On the other side there are not so many rich major clients if we compare to all the other people who might need services of a lawyer. And for most of the people TV, magazine or the phone book advertising is the main way to achieve new information. But they achieve hours of annoying advertising and the lawyers’ ad just needs to be a bit provocative. Anyway a good marketing expert can help to analyze the local market and get some ideas about how to target advertising. It is important to keep the balance between being annoying and being popular. For the defense of TV advertising I can say that lots of lawyer companies are using it and are happy with the results.

Today Internet also gives new possibilities for advertising. Many lawyers are against TV advertising and think that it has the same annoying and negative effect as all the TV advertising. Advertising on the web it is easy and difficult at the same time. The lawyer will always be able to reach clients interested in his field but he will most definitely need a team of good web marketing experts, which will lead the online advertising for him or her. If the lawyer has good understanding of the Internet he can do some minor promotion himself, but it will always better to leave it to the professionals.

Still the best advertising for the lawyer is his reputation. If someone goes to a lawyer he will be interested only in the results of his case, it is not like buying an iPod just to fit in. So the best advertising for a lawyer will be a new successful case or trial, it is even better when it has good press coverage.
