Avoiding accidents in the work placeSubmitted by artavia.seo Thu, 16 Apr 2009
Like most people, you probably don't think that much about getting hurt at work unless you've got a job that's labelled as dangerous. Office workers, shopkeepers, and the like aren't usually concerned about work place injuries, but they can still be hurt if they aren't careful with what they do, and accidents and injuries in the work environment are much more common than you would think. You want to avoid these as much as possible, and there are several ways to do this.
First, make sure that your work space isn't cluttered with things that you could fall or trip over. Are there cords on the floor? They should be taped down or covered with something so that they aren't a tripping hazard. What about that water puddle from where you overwatered the plant? Mop it up. People could slip and get hurt. Also make sure that you use the proper tools and equipment for the job. If you need to change a light bulb and you're balancing precariously on an office chair that rolls, that's not the safest way to do things. Go and get a ladder to do the job, or at least a stable chair without wheels. Better yet, if your building has a maintenance person go and find him or her and get the bulb replaced that way. Those kinds of things should be done carefully. You don't want to get injured at work, and that's especially true if you're doing something that isn't even in your job description. One of the most common reasons for filing a UK accident claim, though, is getting hurt because you tried to lift something too heavy and/or lifted it the wrong way. Use your legs when you lift that heavy box, or get someone to help you. Don't be a hero, because it's often not covered by your health plan. Learn the proper way to lift objects, to move from place to place, and to pay attention to what's going on around you so that you'll really reduce your chances of becoming injured no matter what your work environment is like. If you see unsafe conditions, report them to someone who has the authority to fix them. It could save the company a lot of money in the long run because it will head off any possible lawsuits that might have been filed from injuries that occur due to unsafe conditions.
