Compensation Culture Rife In The Celebrity WorldSubmitted by darren@onlygroup.co.uk Thu, 28 May 2009
Personal injury lawyers have been revealed this week to be in vogue amongst celebrities as many have been revealed to be requesting their services.
In stories released this week those in the public eye have been fighting personal injury claims with the help of their lawyers in an attempt to secure a positive resolution. Firstly UK DJ and actor Goldie has been revealed to have employed a personal injury solicitor so he is able to conduct a compensation claim for an injury he suffered whilst making channel 4 programme The Games. Apparently the music mogul suffered a waterskiing accident causing a spiral fracture. His foot became trapped in a towrope handle and was broken in 2006 He is suing production form Endemol for a total amount of £300,000 as he claims the accident was caused solely through neglect, breach of statutory obligations, breach of contract and breach of equipment regulations. The case continues. Kidney The trend continues with the news that Croatian international footballer Ivan Klasnic plans to make a negligence claim against his former football club accusing them of failing to diagnose an ongoing kidney complaint swiftly. The condition eventually led to the footballer needing a double transplant and as such is seeking a compensation package worth around 11 million Euros. The sportsman has enlisted the services of personal injury lawyers who feel that the expected compensation is achievable, especially considering they advised their client to reject a 350,000 euro settlement from his former club. After calling up various witnesses the personal injury team hope that negligence on behalf of the medical team can be proved. This news comes on the back the former player hit the headlines after being awarded a record amount of £4.3 million compensation after having his career ended by a fellow footballer through a reckless tackle. His leg was broken in two places by a Middlesbrough youth team player, during a reserve game in 2003 and was awarded the damages purely based on what his potential earnings may have been if the injury had never occurred. Personal injury lawyer commented, Mark Gay another lawyer commented: "In terms of precedent, this sees the common law principles of personal injury applied to the football pitch. Say I was a banker earning £10m a year, and you ran me over. Your negligence would be the same as if you'd run over anyone else, but if my ability to keep earning £10m is ended, you could be left with an enormous payout." Celebrities or not, experts have warned that the current climate, which has spawned the recession will be the perfect breeding ground for an increase in compensation claims across the board. The warning comes hot on the heels of a notable rise in claims throughout the UK as the nation becomes litigation happy.
