Cribs Made in China Recalled, Toddler Left Hanging

East Stroudsburg, PA - Imagine the horror of waking to the sound of your infant son screaming from the next room. You run to his aid to find him trapped in his crib, his head wedged inside between two spindles, his body dangling on the outside.

Janine Nieman of East Stroudsburg, PA did not have to imagine the horror. She witnessed it firsthand, the result of a spindle having fallen from the frame of the crib and her son slipping through.
Cribs Made in China and Vietnam Recalled

This week 320,000 Jardine cribs manufactured in China and Vietnam, and sold by Toys "R" Us and Babies "R" Us stores were recalled after 4 incidents of the kind outlined above were reported. Two of the children sustained cuts and bruises. In total there have been 42 reports of broken slats and spindles.

Thankfully, there have been no deaths.

A spokesperson for Toys "R" Us revealed that her company did a comprehensive review of all Jardine cribs in the Spring and removed all such cribs from their selling floor several weeks ago following reports of broken slats and spindles. The cribs were also sold at Geoffrey and KidsWorld stores, and while the latter two enterprises are no longer in operation, the outlets are named in the recall as a number of units were sold through them, when the outlets were open.

The defective cribs were manufactured by Jardine Enterprises offshore, and sold between January 2002 and May 2008.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission's Role in Recalls

The acting head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) noted the agency's role in protecting "our youngest consumers: babies and toddlers," said Nancy Nord in comments June 24th. "Anything that impacts the safety of children is of real importance. This agency will not hesitate to recall products that are defective, and we take very, very seriously our responsibility…"

The product recall follows the adoption of a so-called new, early-warning system at the CPSC that sees product incident reports reviewed weekly in an effort to speed response times, and prevent child injuries.

It has been reported that the slats, or spindles in the affected cribs can be easily kicked out by a child, broken or otherwise fall out on their own, providing an obvious hazard.
