Legal action has been brought against the state of Illinois, US, after two teenage sisters died in a car crash.

Jessica and Kelli Uhl, aged 18 and 13, were heading home when the accident took place.

The crash occurred when a state trooper lost control of his police cruiser last autumn and crashed headfirst into the girls car, killing them instantly. Matt Mitchell, driving the other car, survived.

He was charged last year with reckless homicide after claims he was driving at speeds of over 126 miles per hour when the crash happened. He has yet to face trial.

Mr Mitchell was injured in the crash and underwent several surgical procedures to return him to health.

He had been previously involved in two other accidents during his career as a state trooper, one of which resulted in a $1.7 million judgement against the state.

Mr Mitchell has been relieved of all duties as state trooper following this most recent accident.

Tom Keefe is the lawyer representing the girls family. He says that the lawsuit is not about money or personal gain, but justice for the family and their tragic loss.

He stresses that the family did not choose the figures themselves, saying “my clients didn't select the numbers, I selected them based on what I think is necessary. My clients wouldn't take $224 billion for the lives of those girls”
