Injured? How to choose the right personal injury lawyerSubmitted by Rosalie Mon, 30 Mar 2009
If you're looking for a personal injury lawyer to represent you, it's important that you get the right one. That could mean the one that has the most experience, it could mean the one that you feel most comfortable with, or it could mean the one that charges the least amount of money for quality work. Ideally, it will mean all of those things. However, it isn't always that way, and you can't expect that from the first person that you find. It's difficult to get people who have all of the traits that you're looking for, and when you're injured and you're trying to make a judgment fairly quickly, it becomes even more complex. Don't despair, though, because you can find the right personal injury lawyer for your situation with a little bit of research. The easiest way to start locating one is to ask people who you already know – family and friends. Maybe one of them has used a personal injury lawyer in the past, or they know someone who has. They might be able to point you in the right direction with very little work.
If you don't have friends or family members that can help you find a personal injury lawyer through their own experiences, it might be better if you looked in the phone book or on the Internet. A lot of cities also have legal advice lines or recommendation lines where you can call and get a list of lawyers in your area who handle specific areas of the law. Don't just pick a lawyer who deals with personal injury claims among a bunch of other things. Pick a lawyer who specializes in personal injury claims so that you won't be worried about whether the lawyer actually knows what he or she is doing or whether all of the knowledge that the lawyer has is really up to date. Things like statutes of limitations and other time sensitive issues can be vitally important to a person who has a personal injury claim. Once you've narrowed the field by getting recommendations and doing some phone book and Internet research, you'll need to talk to these lawyers and find out which one you feel the best about. You should have your list of questions for them prepared in advance so that you don't forget to ask them something that might actually be very important, and you should be able to get a free consultation. If a lawyer doesn't offer a free consultation for a personal injury claim, it would be better to find a lawyer who does – and talk to more than just one. Prices, services offered, and comfort level can greatly differ. How many cases a lawyer has handled in the personal injury department, how many of them went to trial, and how many of them he or she won are all important things to ask. You may also want to find a personal injury lawyer who has a policy whereby if he or she doesn't win your case you don't owe anything. There are many lawyers who offer these things for personal injury cases.
