Montreal, PQ - Amidst the many toy recalls due to high levels of lead and choking hazards, another toy has been added to the list.

Mega Brands' popular toy that is primarily aimed toward preschoolers has now been recalled because the magnets in their toy line have been found to detach, which can pose a choking hazard. If swallowed, the magnets can attract each other once inside the body and cause severe internal damage. If the toys are bent hard enough, the magnets can pop out, according to Harold Chizick, a spokesman for Mega Brands.
Toys Recalled in U.S. and Canada

The toys were sold in the United States and Canada between January 2005 and December 2007 at Toys R Us and Wal-Mart stores and two-and-a-half million of the MagnaMan, Magnetix, and Magtastix toys have been recalled. The Magnetix and Magtastix toys are those that were geared more toward preschoolers.

While the company investigates complaints that they have received, they have asked the retailers to remove the toys from the market. They have voluntarily done this as a safety precaution to avoid any injury. A spokeswoman for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has said there has been no discussion regarding banning the toys. The plans are for the company to redesign.
Additional Toy Recalls in Canada

The plant, based in Montreal, has had to issue two other product recalls. The first was in 2006 and the second was in 2007. This is the first recall that cannot be blamed on the manufacturer's previous owners. The first two recalls under the old owners cost tens of millions of dollars in litigation and overall expenses, which caused a sharp decline in the company's share price.
Toy Recall Due to Design Issue

As for this recall, it has not been stated whether or not the company is facing a lawsuit for any injuries sustained by children. It turns out that the problem with these toys is a design issue and not a manufacturing issue such as what has been the problem with Chinese-manufactured toys that has been recalled by toy companies such as Mattel.

Mega Brands is requesting that those who purchased the toys return them for a replacement toy by visiting this website. The site contains information for parents regarding the recall and what steps to take to receive the new replacement toy.
