Understanding How Helmets Save Lives

Submitted by cballatan

Did you know that there's a higher risk of getting hurt from a motorcycle accident than an automobile accident? That's according to the studies conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Reasons are quite obvious - there's virtually no bodily protection offered by motorcycles. Anybody may get thrown away from the motorcycle by the colliding automobile and hit the ground with disastrous results. However, if there's one part of you body you will try to protect first; it's always YOUR HEAD. And that's how helmets have become a valuable device in saving lives.

Today many states in the US have laws on helmets, although other traffic safety agencies push other state governments to make helmet-wearing mandatory instead of optional. It all boils down to safety, after all. When worn, helmets offer a great deal of protection, as it significantly decreases the risk of head injuries when you suffer an unfortunate motorcycle accident. Risks of head and soft-tissue injuries are reduced by about 40%.

Your helmet, when properly worn, protects the most vital parts: your head and face. Depending on how you use your motorcycle, there are different kinds of helmets that offer different levels of protection. If you just use your motorcycle over short distances and at slower speeds, there are helmets structured to keep your head snugly fit against the foam interiors, while keeping your face open. For serious drivers going over long distances (highways and expressways), there are helmets with sturdier features such as face guards to protect the face from the elements. They can be retracted whenever it's unnecessary. And not only that, most face guards today even offer anti-glare protection that keeps drivers from getting distracted by the glares reflected by shiny surfaces of other vehicles.

Today helmet manufacturers prioritize safety with their products. Most helmets sold in the market today are sturdier, lighter and more resistant to impacts than the design of previous years. It's no longer a problem for helmet buyers on which helmet brand they should prefer over another for safety...they just choose which helmet is most comfortable to wear. But of course, when buying a helmet, check for any product defects. Do not buy anything that has even the slightest crack, loose padding or exposed metallic frames. Check with your dealer for a good choice of helmets today.
