In the period of 6-9 month the agility of your baby develops and becomes more complicated. He or she is grabbling freely and even tries to stand up onto two legs. Simultaneously small hand mobility develops: little one tries not just to grip the object in his palm, but also take it with his or her fingers.

Formerly a baby got acquainted with his or her surrounding objects occasionally, now their actions are purposeful. Liberalisation of the little person’s horizon will depend on adults. It is a serious thing for you to show your baby how to play with various toys: how to bang a little drum, how to play the small piano and press the keys, how to handle and ring the ball. At this age babies still chew and play with the rattles and tweeters, but they are also interested in more compound toys like little cars and books with bright pictures (note, always buy books with thick cardboard for small children!).

This age is a special period of time for the parents. Expression “being all eyes” more precisely describes the given situation. Some parents try to restrain the moving activity of their children from considerations of safety or not having enough time to look after them. But you must protect your child only against that is really dangerous to them. Children must learn out from their mistakes.

At the 9 months old the child understands that he or she can play with two toys simultaneously. For example, if they beat one toy on another, a sound will appear (tinkling, rattling) and the child likes these kind of sounds. Now they can play with bricks and pyramidions. In the beginning the child will smash and destroy the built houses and castles, but with time he or she will try to build them on their own. There are special meccanos of flexible plastic for 7-9 month old babies. As a rule, these are open-ended rings, which are linked easily together (though children like to nibble them).

By now a child can play simple games with the adults like “clapping palms”, “cuckoo”, and “let’s fly” etc. Ask your baby to find this or that toy, asking “Where is the rabbit?” If your child does not understand or finds a difficulty in finding the toy, help him “See, the rabbit is here!”
Attention!

1) Toys must not be broken or cracked easily; these contain fine details, which can get into child’s mouth or nose.
2) Plush toys are given to the child only in case if they are easily cleaned.
3) When the child begins to open the surrounding world in his or her room, cover the sharp corners of the furniture with something soft, close up plug sockets, and clear the wires away from the floor.
4) When entering your child’s room, dear parents, do not forget that your child might be standing behind the door.
5) Look carefully after your child and what he or she plays with. Among their “toys” can be not only the safe Mother’s slipper, but crackling plastic sachet (your child certainly will want to try it on).

Prior to this a child perceives the surrounding world by eyesight and hearing, now they will be trying to touch this or that object. Efforts that a child makes trying to master the toy he or she is interested in and difficulties connected with it develop one of the main human capacities- to act purposely and intelligently. Behaviour of your child with the toy is a real independent way to research and discover, as an object as well as an investigation of the potential of his or her own body is a discovery period for all.

It is very important in this period of time not to overburden the child’s attention- give him or her a chance to come to know the particulars of one toy, and only after that’s should you- offer another one. There is one more detail; charm of novelty always attracts your child; in order not let his or her favourite toy become boring; hide it from time to time, thus after a short period of time the little one will be happy to see it as if it was a new one.

A game in the full sense of the word is a good and useful research activity for a child. They get acquainted with the surrounding world in the first place with their toys. However, it is better not to let the choice of toys for your child takes its course. If a one-year-old child everyday tinkles just a rattle and learns nothing about playing with bricks or other games and toys, it is suggested that this can easily develop his or her personality in a negative way, as they will probably be behind his or her peer group as varied play taxes the mind.

Let us understand together how better to organise a playing space for your child and in particular for a baby from 0-3 months old.

There is no great need for toys for a baby from 0 to one month as long as this period of life is determined by contacting and bonding with adults. In the period of 1-3 months visual and aural perception mechanisms are developing. Thus, a one-month-old baby in not just fixing attention upon an adult’s face but also tries to watch it closely. A two-month old baby is already interested in various things, contrasting drawings, patterns. Almost all his or her spare time from eating and sleeping is used examining something very closely; including keeping their ears open to different sounds. Now is the high time to provide the baby with the suitable source of contemplation and visual excitement. Let it be decorative “spots” of pure, bright colours (light-red, yellow, blue, bright-green against grey or cream coloured background). These “spots” may well be represented as geometrical figures or some drawings, pasted on the walls or ceiling. Also you may add to the ceiling with diverse multicoloured figures. Note for your interest that children at this age would seem to rather stare fixedly at objects of bright yellow colouring. However, do not place too many bright objects in the field of the child’s vision – as this would prevent them from focusing onto one spot such as a drawing and examine it properly.

Coordination of eye movement is another stage in the developing of the visual system of the baby. The special “oculomotorius” gymnastics is here to help. Take a bright rattle and place it 40 cm away from the baby’s eyes. When he or she focuses on it, move the rattle right, left, up and down…but you follow the baby’s eye. If they “lose “the rattle, repeat the exercise, but do not show excess of zeal, the exercise should last no more than about two minutes.

It is useful to give the rattle to the baby (of course, it must be light in weight and not too big). The baby still cannot play with it, but gradually, as for developing of its movement system, he or she will bring the rattle to their face in order to perceive it better. In this case the rattle begins to play a forming function, stimulating purposeful movements and developing “eye-arm” coordination.
