A chance to know mankind’s primordial past by the study of comet particles brought back to earth by NASA’s spaceship Stardust. The comet particles are said to contain gases and dust from the formation of the solar system 4.6 billion years ago. Around 150 scientists all over the world are involved in the study of and discovery from the comet remains.<br><br>2.	Paleontologists have found in Nunavut in Canada a 375 million year old fossil that bridges the gap between land and aquatic creatures. Names Tiktaalik roseae or fishapod the fossil may well solve many mysteries of evolution.<br><br>3.	For years mankind has attempted to reach the core of the earth. In April 2006 ateam of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program was able to drill a mile into the ocean crust and collect intact samples of the crusts various layers which includes the deepest layer known as gabbro.<br><br>4. Genetic studies revealed that human and chimpanzee ancestors could have inbred more than 6.3 million years ago.<br><br>8.	A crash between two galaxies enabled scientists to detect invisible dark matter for the first time.<br>9.	 Ocean research teams discovered that a large area of the South Pacific had almost no sea floor sediment.<br><br>10.	Research showed that starlings could learn and recognize grammatical patterns called recursion once thought to be uniquely a human language trait.<br><br>In an attempt to understand himself and life mankind has continuously studied all aspects of life past and present. There was death, war, scandals, sports, and a few delights. What the top 10 stories of 2006 were would vary and depend on individual perspectives. It is after all a matter of choice.<br><br>1.	The month of Jan saw Russia cutting off gas to the Ukraine; Iran stated that it would continue nuclear research; Iraq saw strife and death; Sharon suffered a stroke; US received threats from Osama and stepped up its fight against terrorism and targeted an al-Qaeda leader; results of Iraqi elections were declared. New treatment for cancer increased life expectancy; the Dow hit a milestone;  and a spacecraft headed to Pluto.<br><br>2.	February saw the Atomic energy Board report Iran to the UN; world wide protests occurred over cartoons of Muhammad that appeared in European newspapers; Harvard President resigned; mudslide buried a town in the Philippines; the Olympic Games began in Italy.<br><br>3. November saw the Taiwanese President Accused of corruption; Saddam convicted as  guilty and sentenced to death; Israel ended Gaza incursion; South Africa legalizes same sex marriage; Lebanese minister was assassinated; Nepal plans elections;  and civilian deaths escalate in Iraq, reach record high. Storms ravage the Southeast states of the US and hundreds died in Philippines Typhoon.<br> <br>12.	December  saw Hugo Chavez win in a landslide in Venezuela; crises in Iraq expected to escalate, violence peaks ; suicide bomb kills many in Baghdad; UN leader sworn in; Palestinian leader calls for early elections;  fighting breaks out in Somalia; Israelis decided to build new west bank settlement; Saddam Hussein is executed ; and Gerald Ford died at age 93. According to tech gurus the year 2006 was a “turning point” for the IT industry. <br>Winds of change blew through all aspects hardware, software, and accessories. Internet donned a new mantle and the genX processors redefined PCs and their functioning. Transition was the by-line and new platforms and processors dominated computing along with introduction of a new generation of consoles. Video gaming reached for the skies with new technology, accessories, and futuristic games.<br><br>Among the main hues in IT were a few distinctive milestones:<br><br>1. Death of Steve Irwin the crocodile hunter who brought the world close to crocs through his many films and talks. His death by a croc a species he loved and as devoted to shocked the world.<br><br>2.	Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond was trying to break a land speed record which resulted in a high speed crash. The news of his accident and injuries spread like wild fire.<br><br>3.	The British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen scored a huge box office hit when he shocked and offended ordinary Americans. He was adjudged as one of the “men of entertainment of 2006.”<br><br>4.	The guerrilla artist Bansky hit headlines when he dared to replace Paris Hilton CD with his own CD of remixes titled “Why am I famous? And What am I for.”<br><br>5.	Romance turned sour always interests fans and Sir Paul McCartney’s split with Heather Mills was blockbuster news.<br><br>6.	The Oscars were swept away by a dark horse a Los Angeles race drama Crash which got a late and unexpected surge of support and overtook hot favorite Brokeback Mountain. The win made headlines and created a buzz.<br><br>7. CNN news, Variety, and MSN have showcased online their choices as also a zillion other reviewers. While some based their lists on expert choices or the number of times a news story was read, others conducted online polls. <br><br>As always what the rich and famous do is interesting and entertaining as the year drew to a close people in media were busy trying to review the year and present its highs and lows to the discerning public on the World Wide Web.
