This article will end confusion about different hosting types. Below are described all hosting types you need to know about.

Free hosting - is a type of hosting where you don't have to pay for your space with money, but the service is often compensated with advertisements. Free hosting offers poor or no support at all and has many other disadvantages. Free hosting is more a thing of past, since hosting has become very cheap.

Shared hosting - is the most popular and widely used type of web hosting. Shared means that multiple sites are hosted on the same hard drive and the same server. Each user is limited to a specific space allotment and data transfer.

Reseller hosting - means reselling hosting accounts for a web host under your own brand, pricing structure and everything else. Reseller is provided with all the things he needs, and does not need any hardware. His job is marketing and selling accounts.

Virtual Private Server - is a low cost solution for your own server. Virtual means that you do not rent a real server, but rather split hardware with other virtual servers on the same machine. However Virtual Private Server (often called VPS) provides everything that a real server does: root access, installing your own programs, hosting unlimited domains and more.

Dedicated Server - is an advanced type of hosting which includes rental and exclusive use of a computer, software and internet connection. Dedicated server provides far more control than any other type of hosting, but also means a greater responsibility, since the client has to manage the server himself. Dedicated server is the best solution for big web sites with lots of daily users.

Managed hosting - is an expanded dedicated server hosting. With dedicated server the client takes care of the server, but with managed hosting it is the responsibility of the hosting provider. It includes all the benefits of dedicated server plus server management, maintenance and monitoring 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Colocation - is a type of hosting where you bring your own server to your hosts data center. Hosting company provides you rack space, internet connection, controlled environment (air temperature, security, redundancy) and IT staff available for help.

Clustered hosting - is a hosting type used by the greatest and most important web sites. Clustered means that the same content is served on multiple servers (often referred as mirrors). This enables better resource managing and redundancy.

If you are not sure which hosting is right for you, don't worry!
What is important when choosing a web host?
The most important things are:

1. Reliability:

The main function of a web host is making your web site available for other users of internet all the time. Well, mostly all of the time. The best web hosts are operational more than 99.5 % of their time and they guarantee it. Stay away of web hosts that don't give you such guarantee.

2. Support

This one is extremely important. Web hosts usually offer telephone support, live chat and email support. Make sure you have support available any time you need it. And I really mean anytime. If you can't contact your web host during the weekend you have a potential problem. The best thing to do is to test them. Call them to see how responsive they are. If they don't respond to your email in a timely manner consider choosing another host.

3. Price

You would be fooling yourself if this wasn't an important factor. The thing is, price is connected with the first two factors. Higher prices do not make a good web host, but they raise the chance of getting good support and high reliability. I learned this lesson myself.

When I started my first web page I had a very low budget. I found a cheap hosting that promised me almost anything, but soon made my life full of painful moments. My web site was constantly up and down, without them even knowing that. My visitors were complaining they couldn't send me emails. I tried to contact this web hosting company but they were unresponsive for several days. Soon I had nothing else to do than move my files to another host. That was the last time I had choosen a cheap web host.
Now best web hosts come with a money back guarantee which is great – don't even bother with a web host that doesn't offer you that.

4. Control Panel

Control panel is the page from which you control everything about your web site. You log in to control panel using your username and password. You can edit your files there, add new email accounts, see usage of your disk space or statistics of your visitors to name just a few. There are differences in control panels among hosts so make sure your control panel can do what you want. You don't wanna call your web host every time you want to know how many visitors you had last week.

5. Technical details

Disk space: is the amount of space you get. Most web hosts give you more space than you can use.
Data transfer: is the amount of data transfered from your site to your visitors.
Email: number of email accounts you can open.

Go to our web site and check which web host meet these criteria!

Copyright © 2006, http://www.EasySiteGuide.com - The Easy Site Guide :)

--
Easy Site Guide is a great resource for beginners.
We know how to choose a good name - and there is no reason you shouldn't know it too.

When choosing a name you should keep in mind that domain names are meant to help users find you more easily. If you want a good domain name follow these simple rules:

1. Shorter is better

Make your domain name as short as possible as long it remains recognizable. For example usedcars.com is far better than weofferusedcarsatlowprices.com. It is easier to remember and it also minimizes the risk of typing it wrong.

2. Make it simple and memorable

Avoid using abbreviations, hyphens or anything that could put your visitors in doubt how to spell or say it. Domain name should be easy to remember. This is especially important when people try to find you the second time.
The easiest way to follow this rule is to read your name over the phone to your friend and see if he got it right. If you have to explain anything than you have a problem. Change it, you will thank me later. :)

3. Your domain name should be your website name

Really. The name of your domain should reflect the content of your website. Why? Because when people think of your website lets say its name is Rare flowers they will try finding you by that name. In this case rareflowers.com would be a good choice for your domain name.
If you follow this rule you also gain some advantage with the search engines.

4. What about extensions?

My advice is use a .com. If you are serious about your site you should avoid various new domain extensions. It takes a bit more time to register .com since it is the most popular extension but you wont regret it.
Following these simple rules will put you way ahead of those who will register just the first name they can think of.

For other great tips on domain names visit our website.

Copyright © 2006, EasySiteGuide.com

--
Easy Site Guide is a great resource for beginners.
