Once a business market enters a mature stage, the emphasis changes from customer acquisition to one of customer retention and increased revenue per customer.

This requires companies to know more about their customers at an individual, rather than a market level. Attempting to achieve this using traditional means would be cumbersome, expensive and take far too long.

This is where Business Intelligence shines. The core value of BI capability is to analyse large volumes of data to extract those hidden gems that can turn marginally profitable services and customers into highly contributing revenue streams. The more customers a business has, the value BI can derive increases exponentially.

Being able to identify your most profitable customers, was in the past more about guess work and subjective surveys than the laser targeted, logic driven capabilities of a business intelligence application.

BI helps businesses understand customer regardless of the industry in which you operate. Consumer retailing, telecommunications, and financial services were early adopters of BI, and there are many case studies supporting the positive
impact they had on the business. Typcial activities used by such companies to increase profits include:

Improving revenue-generating processes

Market analysis

Customer segmentation

Campaign management

Channel management

Customer relationship management (CRM)

Event Based Marketing

Marketing Resource Management.

Marketing Analysis

Marketing analysis refers to analytical activities used to understand revenue generation fundamentals, such as:

Who buys which products

When they buy

Location of purchase

Frequency of purchase

Amount of each purchase

Price point responses

Response to promotional offers

Percentage revenue generated by each product or service

Sales trends for each product or service

Basket bundles - which products or services tend to be purchased together

With a well-structured BI environment, marketing analysis can be done in near real-time, providing fast feedback on current promotions or product launches, as well as indentifying long-term revenue trends. This helps marketing better understand the underlying drivers of revenue growth.

Using better information, companies become more effective in attracting new customers, retaining profitable customers, and achieving sustainable revenue growth.

By understanding the relationship between channels and profitability, targeted incentives can be introduced to drive customers towards more profitable channels, and early feedback allows adjustments to be made to promotions to increase marketing ROI.

Customer Segmentation

Business intelligence provides the capability to segment customers to greater levels of granularity. Micro-segmentation can be aligned with individual promotional offers for up-sell and cross-sell campaigns.

This ability to substantially extend traditional customer segmentation allows businesses to gain greater insight into buyer behaviour. Previous consumer segmentation was limited to:

Demographic segmentation - grouping customers by common characteristics such as age, income, occupation

Geographic segmentation - grouping customers by where they lived, worked and/or shopped.

Psychographic segmentation sought to group customers by such potentially common characteristics as personality, leisure activities, and values

Business demographic segmentation - grouping customers by such characteristics as industry, role in the value chain, and revenues

Regardless of the basis of segmentation, the connection between belonging to a particular segement and actual purchasing behavior was not clear. By using BI tools and techniques to mine data, relationships between various attributes could be identified, without any pre-conceived expectations.

Whilst BI tools do not replace traditional segmentation and market research tools, they do provide more powerful with advanced capability to narrow segments, and better understand the needs and values of those segments. Using this information, products and services may be more targeted towards providing a closer match to identified needs and values or smaller groups. This results in improved conversion of offers, increased ARPU and greater profitability.

Advertising, Direct Marketing, and PR

Using BI driven market analysis and customer segmentation, a deeper understanding of customers helps clarify marketing messages used in advertising, direct marketing, and PR campaigns. Campaigns can be highly tuned to meet specific requirements, such as:

Product or service awareness

Product education and positioning

Brand building

Countering rival campaigns

Public image

Call to purchase offers

Real time BI can provide instant feedback on the impact the campaign message is having, and adjustments can be made to redirect failing campaigns, providing a better return on advertising budget.

The level of granularity of such targeted advertising is unlimited. Specific purchasing behaviour of individual consumers can be identified. By only targeting those most likely to accept an offer, results in reduced campaign execution costs.

Channel Management

Sales channels vary by industry and position within the value chain:

Product retailing and retail services - stores, branches, kiosks, online, mail-order and/or telephone channels

Consumer product manufacturers - distribution channels and different types of retail store channels

Industrial product manufacturers - direct sales, industry specific distributors and wholesalers

In some cases, enterprises have expanded vertically to integrate channels inside the corporate arena. However, most companies must make strategic decisions as to what types of channels to use and which vendors within a given channel. BI can be used for channel analysis in similar ways as it does for customer analysis to gain insight into, for instance:

Revenue from each channel

Growth trends by channel by product

By integrating this performance data with channel cost information, channels can be optimized to become more cost-effective.

CRM

In BI, CRM means analyzing customer behaviour and sales force performance to identify opportunities to cross sell different product and service bundles.

CRM helps companies better understand their customers and enable more effective marketing analysis and customer segmentation. Coupled with optimization of marketing and sales business processes, more effective revenue generation and revenue growth can be achieved.

Category Management

Large retail giants such as Wal-Mart have consolidated consumer product retailing, driving highly competitive strategies.

Category management is one such strategy, where retailers are able to optimize contribution margin per cubic foot of retail shelf space.

This is achieved by pushing inventory and shelf stocking costs onto suppliers, avoiding stock-outs, and allocating shelf space based on a combination of understanding customers purchasing habits and on knowing revenue and gross margin characteristics of each product and product category.

BI provides advanced category management capability. Importing point-of-sale data into the BI environment, retailers can understand product-level demand trends and how they vary by relevant dimensions such as geography and service area demographics.

Revenue lift with promotions can be identified and used to target customers based on past purchasing behaviour related to similar promotions.

Using a combination of multidimensional demand trend data and the ability to track the effectiveness of promotions, retailers ensure they have the most profitable product mix on the shelves. Category management BI also can be used to optimize supply chain performance, further improving profits.

Event Based Marketing

An added impact of BI is the awareness a business gains of all the different interactions a customer has with their channels, direct sales teams, customer support and websites. Each interaction is regarded as an event, and an opportunity to gain further insight about the customer, the way they use your products and services, and their perception of the business. By analysing the current event in real time, individual offers can be customised and presented to the customer, during the event duration.

Marketing Resource Management

Marketing utilises a broad range of resources to manage customers, promotions, events etc. Using BI capabilities to improve processes surrounding these instances, helps to best utilise resources where sales margins are most profitable.

Summary

The above examples of how BI is used to improve revenue generation and profit are all based around analysis detailed and specific information about customers past purchasing behaviour. By gaining a better understand as to the needs, preferences and purchasing behaviour of customers, the business can become more effective at growing revenue and retaining profitable customers. And that means improved profit margins.

--
Gail La Grouw is consulting director of Coded-Vision Consulting, architects of optimal corporate and marketing performance management.

Do you often find yourself tired, depressed, gaining weight, getting sick more often, not making progress in your job or business? If I told you that brisk walking just 30 minutes a day could solve ALL of these problems, would you believe me? Probably not, but read on, and let me convince you how you can turn your life around, just by walking.

A short, brisk walk energizes the body by boosting metabolism to release energy from fat. Walking also releases endorphins which have a calming effect on the brain to prevent depression, and reduce stress and anxiety.

And part of the outcome of that fat burning is weight loss. At the very least, if you don't find yourself losing weight, you will notice a gradual change in body mass, as your fat reduces and your muscle builds, giving you a stronger, fitter physique.

How are we going so far...starting to get convinced? Read on, there's more.

Walking at a moderate pace later in the day can help you sleep better. In one study, people who walked more than 20 minutes per day reduced their sleep problems by one third. Step it up to a 'brisk' pace, and you can cut sleep problems in half.

Now for the disease prevention bit - it seems genetics determines only a small part of your health profile. Research shows how you live your life has a much greater impact on how often you get sick and how long you remain healthy before suffering age-related illnesses. Walking regularly can prevent and improve many serious chronic diseases, for instance:

Lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attack.

Reduce cardiovascular disease by as much as 30-50 percent.

Protect against diabetes in high-risk people, and lower blood glucose and
improve insulin action in diabetics.

Decrease osteoarthritis pain, and improve stability, endurance, and agility.

Reduce the risk of colon cancer and possibly breast cancer.

Interestingly, it has been shown that skinny sedentary people are more likely to develop heart disease than overweight people who exercise regularly. But don't let that stop you from losing weight. Being in the healthy weight range improves your overall health profile, and walking helps this by increasing the calories you burn each day. The increase in muscle mass, in turn helps to burn even more, when you are NOT even exercising.

Okay, so you get the idea about the health and happiness bit. But how does it improve your business?

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health, and regular exercise helps lower stress levels and decrease depression. In turn, this boosts your desire to exercise more. By boosting blood circulation to the brain, you will think more positively, and think clearer. This assists in both creativity and problem solving. It also increases your mental endurance, meaning your work more effectively throughout the day. Some research also has shown that walking is associated with less cognitive decline and a reduced risk of dementia later in life. That all adds up to greater productivity for longer.

Walking is one of the most effective and health enhancing actions your can take for health and longevity. It is just as effective in many ways as more vigorous forms of exercise [and probably less damaging to joints, with less risk of injury].

Walking is a superior life success habit, make it one of yours!!

--

Nicola Carr is editor of anti-aging website Antiaging-Wellness.com.
Is the IT management industry at a tipping point. "The kind of change that is so pervasive and complex that it’s especially hard to see or define". Gail La Grouw, technology marketing strategy consultant for Coded Vision Consulting believes so, and IP convergence technology website Electrosmart.net supports her view.

According to Gail, IT Managers have been batting their heads against brick walls built around their IT silos by corporate executives who still tend to see IT as a necessary evil. Because they don't understand it; they don't want to know about it.

But technology has moved far beyond the desktop and with the knowledge wave well upon us, corporates that fail to capture their own Corporate Intelligence and put in systems and technology to utilise it will become lost in the new IQ Economy.

More and more, processes are being streamlined to remove administrative
bottlenecks and allowing intelligence technology to take over transactional
activity.

HR strategies are looking at ways to support more innovation and collaboration amongst corporate workers.

Has the 'Glass Ceiling' been replaced by a 'Technology Wall' with older generation top managers refusing to let younger, more tech savvy managers up the ladder to expose their lack of understanding of how technology will be the future driver and keeper of their organisations.

Gail has worked mainly in mobile telecommunications for the past 12 years and has led the strategy for the introduction of 3G data services and
applications. "By having an indepth understanding of three critical areas:

the technology, the market, and the legal ramifications" I have developed a broad perspective of how new technologies impact the market, and how the various new partnerships and service integrations are throwing old style legal agreements and compliance bodies into a whirl".

Sabane Oxley has motivated many companies into updating their transaction technologies to provide more transparency into transactional data. Those who have been really smart, have used this opportunity to cascade their strategy
down through their organisations using methodologies such as Balanced Scorecard.

It's generally time for a good clean out - that means getting rid of old technology, old thinking and those who will not embrace the idea that new converged technologies are essential to business survival moving forward.

Those that leave their run late will do so at their own peril. Customers are getting more demanding of information and support - and if the systems do not provide what they want, the lessening of brand loyalty today means they opt out fast and move onto find a company that can support their needs. In many cases, the customer is more tech savvy than the company, so new support benchmarks need to be set at the customer perceived level.

Fortunately, there is a growing interest in process and IT organizational assessment. But many organizations struggle to find the best path forward.

Implementing new technology can be very destructive on 'business as usual' if
not planned in sufficient detail, and with sufficient knowledge of how the
business works. The business analysis phase is the MOST critical; yet sadly, it is the phase left to junior analysts. A good process consultant will drive more value into the upgrade than a project manager or program director; it's time the industry recognised this an elevated both their status and their remmuneration.

Those will process re-engineering and network systems and applications knowledge are going to be in hot demand in the next ten years. Personal skill sets and exeperience will become valuable assets and in recognition of this, experienced consultants such as Gail are setting up <a href="http://www.theiqx.com>IQ Exchanges where those with these assets can exchange their value.

IT Silos must be broken down and technology embraced as an integral part of every part of the organisation. The geeks rule today. Just as lack of embracing technology is creating generation gaps in society; so too have
generation gaps appeared in business.

Many organizations are attempting to remedy this by mergers and acquisitions
to re-architect their organizations on new Convergence designs.

The new design will support:

- better data integration

- more collaborative management environments

- shared network, systems, and applications

- virtualization of desktops

- converged access common “trusted” data sources

- extensible reporting and analytic capability

IT Infrastructure Convergence

Collaboration starts in IT. CMDB's [configuration management databases] are a foundation capability, driving integration of management investments, and acting as catalysts for political and cultural changes across IT and business.

Virtualization pools destop resources into a single shared pool - getting rid of processing silos at the desktop
Web 3.0 collaboration tools are finally making it easier for workers to share
their knowledge

Service-oriented architectures (SOA) and multi-dimensional relationships between IT and business are needed to drive further collaboration.

New Converged Business Models

Web based sharing of systems between service and marketing partners backed by
higher levels of reliability, QoS and security are merging multiple businesses into single converged service delivery models.

IT is effectively creating new converged business models. Models where IT architecture, culture, process and politics are becoming visible interdependencies.

--

Gail La Grouw is consulting director of Coded-Vision Consulting, architects of optimal corporate and marketing performance.
At Antiaging-Wellness we have as our corporate slogan "Choose The Way You Age". This refers to the choice you have to age quickly or slowly, painfully or pain-free. As a partner to that anti-aging slogan, I believe we also "Choose The Way We Live" every single moment, of every single day.

In both instances, the choice is 100% up to you. I recall the wisdom impacted by Socrates to the young conqueror Alexander the Great, when he was contemplating embarking on a journey to conquer all of Asia. The choice he was given was this - you can choose to live a short and glorious life, or a long and boring life. Alexander chose the former, and off he went with his army to come to an untimely death just one month sort of turning 33.

In every moment, there are two possibilities.

1. To be totally focused and absorbed by what is happening.

2. To focus on what is not happening, or what we think should or shouldn't be

happening.

The difference is that the first option gives power to the event, making it ever lasting in our minds, and enriching our lives. It is a positive approach to life. To focus on what is missing, narrows our experience to a negative perspective, and almost guarantees to support the same situation recurring time and time again.

Since our bodies are programmed to respond faster to fear than to success,

there is reason why we tend to take a negative view of most situations. Your key to a happier life is to bypass that natural response and train your mental processes to intercept your fear and replace it with the positive aspects of the event.

In other words, keep your focus on how to make your life better and more pleasureable, rather than how to reduce things that are painful.

Once you get stuck in the rut of focussing on the negative aspect, your natural tendency is to fix it or try to change everything. This just perpetuates the situation and ensures that more and more of your life is focused on that negative situation. You effectively expand your sphere of suffering, and most of us just love to pull others into that pool or misery with us.

Instead, make the conscious decision that you accept what has happened, you refuse to pay more than any direct result of the event, you will NOT empower it to expand into other areas of your life. Put it in a box. Close the lid on the box. And kick it right out of your life. It may sound a bit weird, but physically terminating an event or an emotion is a very powerful signal to the brain. For instance, write down the event. Put it in a jar and burn it - sip champagne whilst you watch and rejoice that this instance of your life is gone forever.

If you keep hanging on to painful events and past hurts, you will find that by age 40, your life is overwhelmed with baggage. You have positioned yourself into a rut of struggle, dispondency and a miserable future.

Fortunately, because you put yourself there, you can get yourself out. You just need a bigger jar and two bottles of champagne!!

But take action - your life is for you to control, not for your life to control you.

You can choose the way you live.

--

Nicola Carr is publishing editor of anti-aging website Antiaging-Wellness .com.
HLEX – A New Longevity Measure Or Chronic Illness Indicator?

A new measure of aging is HLEX – Health Life Expectancy. Just a reminder on the two previous measures:

Life Span – the age to which the body could survive, forsaking the impact of disease

Life Expectancy – the average to which we currently live, taking account of disease

Although the average lifespan is increasing through improved nutrition and better healthcare, the life expectancy, the actual age of mortality remains about the same. This is due to the impact of chronic disease.

But what is more alarming, is that the average age to which we live before suffering a chronic illness is reducing. This has led to a new measure being introduced, the HLEX.

HLEX is the life expectancy without a chronic illness. The HLEX is reducing due to two reasons:

1. The number of cases of chronic disease each year is escalating across the globe

2. Prior to improved healthcare, patients would have died from simple heart attacks, strokes etc. Today medical interventions are capable of maintaining life, even if not curing the disease.

In reviewing chronic disease statistics, it is troubling to learn:

- In 2000, there were 600 million people aged 60 and over; there will be 1.2 billion by 2025 and 2 billion by 2050.

- Today, about 66 percent of all older people are living in the developing world; by 2025, it will be 75 percent.

- In the developed world, the very old [age 80+] is the fastest growing
population group.

- Women outlive men in virtually all societies; consequently in very old age, the ratio of women/men is 2:1.

- Without action, 17 million people will die prematurely this year from a chronic disease.

- One billion adults are overweight - without action, this figure will surpass 1.5 billion by 2015. 22 million children under five years old are overweight

If the major risk factors for chronic disease were eliminated, at least 80% of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes would be prevented; and 40% of cancer would be prevented.

Chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes, are by far the leading cause of mortality in the world, representing 60% of all deaths. Out of the 35 million people who died from chronic disease in 2005, half were under 70 and half were women.

It seems we are just not taking repsonsibility for our own health. Obesity is still climbing in the USA, yet exercise is not increasing and meal portions are not decreasing. We are all ready to jump up and down when 'the government' will not fund preventative vaccinations or treatments - yet as individuals, we are not willing to make simple lifestyle changes to reduce the toxins in our lives. We continue to eat toxic food, engage in smoking cigarettes, drink too much alcohol, use unnecessary numbers of toxic cleaning products, build with toxic materials, work in toxic environments......and do little to balance the score or help our bodies rid itself of this toxic overload.

Do you just not realise - you are killing yourself. Not your boss, not the Government. Good food is available everywhere. It does not need to be 'organic'. It just needs to be lower in sugar, trans fats, artificial colorings and preservatives. Whole foods are not expensive, and they are easy to prepare. Supplement this diet with some antioxidants and you will add years to your life. See antiaging-wellness.com for more information on toxic foods, toxic house, free radicals and antioxidants.

--

Nicola Carr is publishing editor of anti-aging website Antiaging-Wellness .com. Slow aging and prevent disease to enjoy a
healthier, more energetic life with anti-aging products and treatments and tips on boosting your energy.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

The hunt for effective antiaging products is a world-wide sport for both men and women. New antiaging products are being introduced onto the marketplace on a weekly basis, making your search for the ultimate antiaging treatment a rather confusing and complicated process. To help filter out the help from the hype, I have put together a few guidelines for you.

Total Antiaging Package - a total antiaging package contains both protective and nourishing elements. For instance, for your skin, you will need both UV protection to prevent photodamage, antioxidants to rid the skin of toxins and nourishing ingredients to prevent wrinkles. You will need anti-aging products for your skin as well as anti-aging supplements for the body. The key products to make an effective antiaging program are

Antioxidants - all products that contain antioxidants have antiaging properties. This applies to antiaging skincare creams and antiaging supplements alike.

Protection - protect the skin from UV and chemical damage. Also protect the body from the effect of contaminated air and water by using purification systems

Cleansers - daily cleansing of the skin and 6 monthly cleansing programs for the body

Moisturizers - filtered water is the greatest body hydrator, and special moisturizing elements in skin care products help to retain that moisture with a protective barrier, as well as add external skin-deep moisture elements

Nourishing - collagen boosting skin nutrients for the skin and nutritional supplements for the body

Non-Damaging - a key element of any antiaging product is that it does not do any damage to the skin. There is no point buying a pack of skin cleanser, toner and moisturizer if the cleanser or toner is harsh and damages and dries the skin. No amount of moisturizer can counter a damaged skin cell. Become more aware of the damaging effect of processed food ingredients. Fresh organic food does the least harm to the body. Don't be tempted in to buying very cheap nutritional supplements. Many of these are manufactured in Asia in less than ideal conditions and may contain harmful toxins.

Waste Disposal - antiaging skincare also needs an effective exfoliating product to remove accumulated dead skin cells. The same applies to the body - regular use of a bowel cleanser and liver detoxifier clears out all the toxic waste that prevents the effective absorption of nutritional food and supplements.

Be realistic in your expectations - there is no 'Fountain of Youth' but the sooner you start, and the more balanced your antiaging regime, the better the results.

--

Nicola Carr is publishing editor of anti-aging website Antiaging-Wellness .com. Slow aging and prevent disease to enjoy a healthier, more energetic life with anti-aging products and treatments and

tips on boosting your energy.

Source: http://www.articletrader.com

Managing energy is not just about food. It's about managing working conditions
that affect how your body releases energy. This includes managing stress, oxygen levels, exercise levels and food breaks. Work demands can zap energy
very quickly so you need to have a few tricks up your sleeve to boost your energy supply to help you both physically and mentally.

The Brain Protein Continuum
The neurons in your brain are largely made of fat. The brain cells communicate with each other using eurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are made up from amino acids; protein building blocks. Another important amino acid is tyrosine.

Eating protein increase levels of tyrosine in the brain, helping the brain
generate nor-epinephrine and dopamine. These chemicals promote alertness. The absorption of protein is assisted by carbohydrates. So eating a balanced supply of carbs and protein throughout the day will keep that brain network humming and avoid that 3pm black hole.

Top 10 Work Day Energy Guidelines

Start the day well rested - Treat your bed as an important energy re-supply station and ensure you book in long enough for the process to be completed. That means 7 to 9 hours a night.

Try a workout first thing - even 20 minutes will boost your bodies oxygen supply and keep your head thinking straight longer during the day. It's often much harder to feel inspired at the end of the day. If morning isn't your thing - the evening can still work. Try tricking yourself. Change into workout gear as soon as you get home. Switch on the television or put on a DVD, and instead of heading for the couch, sit on a workout bike or yoga mat with some weights. A few seconds later the brain starts connecting the visual messages and before you know it an hour has gone by.

Keep the body supplied with fuel - Eat a small, healthy snack every few hour of lean protein and whole grain carbs. The carbs provide a rapid energy release, while the protein provides longer-lasting energy.

Keep the body well hydrated - air conditioning is extremely drying on your system.

Take an oxygen break - if you don't have time for a full lunch break, take at least a 10 minute walk around the block or anywhere where there is more oxygen than car fumes. I use walking catch-ups. If a staff member wants to chat about something briefly I get us both out for a walk.

Try boosting energy during the day - some deep breathing preferably not whilst on the phone to the CEO]; taking the stairs instead of the elevator or just standing up doing some leg raises all help to move oxygen around the body and boost the cells energy producing processes. I keep a small hand weight on my desk and it's amazing what you can do during a phone call!

Keep good energy nutrition snacks at work - protein balls are my favourite. I make them on Sunday and they last the whole week in the refrigerator. [that is if I don't eat them all by Thursday]. I use them for my 3pm low zone snack and as a mental pick-me-up before entering a long meeting.

Reduce the alcohol during the week. - try getting it down to one glass a night - you will be amazed how much easier it is to get out of bed in the morning and you will be more likely to feel like doing that early morning workout. And your skin will look fantastic!

Go easy on the coffee - caffeine is not a good long term solution for energy throughout the day. It's addictive and better left to one cup first thing in the morning. You will sleep better also.

Reduce the size of your evening meal and avoid carbs after 6pm - you will find you will sleep better and that translates into more energy during the day.

And if you want to contribute to the worlds renewable energy supply - take
a leaf from enterprising gym enthusiasts like Doug Woodwring who are harnessing energy created from everyday workouts and converting it into usable power.

--

Nicola Carr is an antiaging fitness coach for Antiaging-wellness.com.

Like many aspects of technology today, many of the features provided on camcorders are never used. Camcorders are categorized according not only to the use for which they are applied by the end user, but also to the degree of automation desired.

Consumer Camcorders - are the light, handheld cubes with point and click convenience. Just don't expect me to read more than 4 pages of the manual.

Prosumer Camcorders - are for those consumers who want to expand their filming environments and require manual override settings for aperture, focus, zoom and light control. Prosumer camcorders are often used by wedding videographers, and corporate presentations.

Professional Camcorders - these are the big heavy guns with shoulder mounted, external microphone, and low-light film-like quality. These are the documentary making camcorders.

Out of all the features, the following have stood out as being the most important to the Prosumer:

Manual Control Capability - since Prosumer is about more quality, the need to manually set focus, aperture and light are critical.

Low Light - with most Prosumer camcorders having 1/3? 3CCD chips, features that concentrate light and render more color and saturation are preferred. Low light is extremely variable between camcorders and is generally very poor in most consumer models.

Button Positioning and Size - its all very well having manual control features, but if the access to these features is too difficult, so too is filming. Manual buttons on the casing are preferred to LCD touch screen buttons common to Sony Camcorders.

Image Quality - this is normally the base image quality, without manual intervention. As manual control is standard at Prosumer level, the standard auto image quality does not rate as highly as the ability to manually manipulate it.

Size and Handling - Prosumer camcorders are much bigger than the consumer handheld models. Most are tube like in dimensions, except the highly favored Panasonic AG DVC30 which is more cube like. Balance in the hand is important, although most Prosumers recognise that for quality video, using a tripod is essential.

Night Function - night function was previously managed by slowing the shutter speed. This may have been fine for still landscapes, but add a little motion and you add a whole lot of blur. Other IR options resulted in a greenish/yellowish tinge to the film. Again the Panasonic AG DVC30 has triumphed here with a totally different approach.

Inbuilt Audio - anyone serious about video quality is also serious about audio quality. No camcorder is going to give you top quality audio from a built in microphone. But of these models - the one that has the microphone furthest away from the noise of camera operations is again, the Panasonic. Getting an idea that this model came up on top?

Price / Value - prices vary significantly from store to store. For example the Panasonic AG DVC30 can cost as low as $1400 up to nearly $2500. There are plenty of comparison sites but check first on availability - what they state online is not always accurate.

The Prosumer models that came up tops, in order were:

1. Panasonic AG DVC30

2. Sony VX-2100 [although technically a professional camcorder, its price
is comparable]

3. Canon GL2

4. Sony TRV-950

The top two were quite close in scoring [13 and 15] and the bottom two were equal but a long way down the points [26]. The points were awarded in terms
of ranking 1 to 4 amongst the models, and then totalled. Not scientific or weighted, but it does provide a relative scoring base between models. Our next article will go into more detail on the feature comparisons between these four models.

--

Max Carr is Editor of RichMediaMix.com.

When was the last time your took a complete fitness test? By middle age, most of us have had at least one fitness test as part of a medical check for a job or a life insurance policy. Many of us take the easy way out of judging our fitness by our energy levels. We gauge our energy levels by how tired or energetic we feel. We can also get a good idea of our cardio-vascular fitness by climbing a few flights of stairs, or going for a run. But gauging our fitness in others areas is sometimes not as easy.

Restricted joint movement can be from previous injuries or the onset of age-related degenerative changes. Or maybe, it is just because you have lost your flexibility fitness.

Lack of energy may result from poor sleep or a metabolic disorder, and have no relation to our true fitness.

Unless you undertake a complete fitness test you really just don't know.

A typical testing program includes:

Cardiac Fitness - Step Test

Flexibility - Trunk and Hip Flexion Tests

Agility - Zigzag Test

Balance - Standing Balance Test

Upper Body Strength - Push Up and Bench Press Tests

Lower Body Strength - Wall Squat Test

Core Strength - Crunch Test

Explosive Power - Burst Test

A comprehensive fitness test is usually carried out by a Fitness and/or Medical Professional using gym equipments and special measuring equipment. However,
there are a number of tests you can carry out at home that give you sufficient
accuracy to use effectively in any fitness program.

The range of measures includes:

Body Frame

Weight to Height

Body Mass Index [Body Fat]

Heart Rate

Blood Pressure

The real benefit of completing these measures and tests every six months or
so, is that it gives you feedback as to what areas of your fitness program you
need to change. Most of us have limited time available for staying in shape,
so you want to ensure that your efforts will reap the best rewards.

In addition, continuing to play sports in later years requires a more comprehensive
training approach. In early years when our joints move freely, muscles are well
formed and tendons flexible, we are not so likely to injure ourselves from normal
movements.

As we age, our muscles tend to reduce in size and strength, tendons shorten
and joints move less freely. These all put additional strain on the body to
achieve the same movements, so injury is more likely.

If you don't feel confident undertaking your own measurements and tests, get
a professional to do one for you.

Most Doctors will measure weight, heart rate and blood pressure. But few do
a complete physical assessment, unless you specifically ask for one, and in
most cases, this means being referred to a diagnostic physician.

The local gym is a good place to get a Fitness Assessment. The instructors are
all trained to complete the tests and in many cases, have a better understanding
of the interrelated movements of the body than many Doctors, who concentrate
more on pathology.

Some fitness tests are best done by professionals as they take you closer to
the limits of exertion. This is the case for the Cardio-Stress Test. This test
is a more aggressive form of the 3 minute Step Test, but instead of a simple
step, it uses an exercise machine such as a treadmill or exercise bike, and
an ECG machine. It is a progressive and maximum exercise test; starting from
a walking pace and gradually increasing pace. Electrical impulses from the heart
tissue are recorded by surface electrodes places on the chest wall. A stress
test is useful for detecting early changes in the heart function indicating
potential heart disease.

Before you undertake any new fitness program it is recommended to seek medical
clearance. It is also important to make sure you have warmed up sufficiently. Sometimes you can integrate the warm up into the test program, such as using
the 3-minute step test as a warm up to lower body flexibility tests. Overstraining cold or still muscles to get a better test score is counter-productive, and it is of more value to you to have a true result, rather than an over-stressed, possibly damaging one.

Get detailed fitness measures and tests and tips on maximizing your energy during workouts.

--
Nicola Carr is Ant-aging and Fitness Coach for www.antiaging-wellness.com.
